{"id":380500,"date":"2020-12-16T08:05:56","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T06:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=380500"},"modified":"2020-12-16T08:07:18","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T06:07:18","slug":"new-mid-range-snapdragon-processor-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/380500-new-mid-range-snapdragon-processor-launched.html","title":{"rendered":"New mid-range Snapdragon processor launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Qualcomm has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualcomm.com\/products\/snapdragon-678-mobile-platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>launched<\/strong><\/a> a new smartphone processor &#8211; the Snapdragon 678 &#8211; for mid-range smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>This chip is the successor to 2018&#8217;s Snapdragon 675, which is used in popular smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy A70, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, and Vivo U20.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that it arrives two years after its predecessor, the Snapdragon 678 features minimal improvements, and uses the same CPU and GPU.<\/p>\n<p>However, Qualcomm stated that it delivers &#8220;faster speeds with greater efficiency&#8221; thanks to several tweaks.<\/p>\n<p>The Snapdragon 678 boasts the Qualcomm Kryo 460 CPU with six efficiency and two performances cores.<\/p>\n<p>The CPU&#8217;s clock can now go up to 2.2GHz instead of the 2GHz of the Snapdragon 675, which should result in better processing performance.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Qualcomm claimed it has boosted the speed of the Adreno 612 GPU to render in-app graphics with &#8220;smooth, flawless visuals&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It did not disclose exactly how these enhancements were achieved, however.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Photography and connectivity<\/h3>\n<p>In terms of photography, the chip supports up to 192MP capture, dual cameras up to 16MP, 5x optical zoom, and portrait mode.<\/p>\n<p>While it also comes with the same Snapdragon X12 LTE modem for connectivity, Qualcomm has added support for Licensed Assisted Access (LAA).<\/p>\n<p>This enables the smartphone to tap into unlicensed spectrum in the 5GHz band for increased network performance.<\/p>\n<p>When used in conjunction with LTE-advanced carrier aggregation, this allows for peak download speeds of up to 600Mbps and upload speeds up to 150Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>The processor is likely to feature in cheaper upcoming 4G mid-range smartphones, while Qualcomm&#8217;s other major mid-range processor range &#8211; the 700 series &#8211; will be employed in more powerful mid-rangers and affordable 5G models.<\/p>\n<p>The Snapdragon 768G 5G launched in May 2019, for example, is available on the Redmi K30 Racing Edition, which retails for 1,999 Chinese Yuan, or around R4,550.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/379904-apple-begins-work-on-its-own-cellular-modem.html\" rel=\"bookmark\">Apple begins work on its own cellular modem<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Qualcomm has launched a new smartphone processor &#8211; the Snapdragon 678 &#8211; for mid-range smartphones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":351619,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[3524,59174,68124,68122],"class_list":["post-380500","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hardware","tag-qualcomm","tag-smartphone-chips","tag-smartphone-processors","tag-snapdragon-678"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/380500"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=380500"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/380500\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":380502,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/380500\/revisions\/380502"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/351619"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=380500"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=380500"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=380500"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
