Telkom is trialing an 8Mbps ADSL service, but said that it will take some time before the service is commercially made available.<\/p>\n

The company said that doubling the speed of its 4Mbps service is not a simple process as it must be accompanied by suitable backhaul upgrades to the network to support the higher access speeds.<\/p>\n

The company is also trialing ADSL2+, mainly aimed at supporting Telkom Media’s IPTV plans. ADSL2+ can support speeds of up to 24Mbps.<\/p>\n

The higher speeds most likely form part of Telkom’s strategy to increase the usage per ADSL link to homes and businesses.<\/p>\n

In March the company’s CEO Reuben September said that Telkom is planning to ‘own the client’s home’ through its home gateway where ADSL play a pivotal role.<\/p>\n

The company plans to grow its ADSL subscriber base to 637 000 in the 2008\/9 financial year and to 773 000 in the 2009\/10 financial year.<\/p>\n
