Nokia is still the clear favourite when it comes to cellphones, with most other makers scrambling for their share of the remaining pie. <\/p>\n
This is according to a report by analysts Gartner, which found that Nokia’s phones accounted for 39.1% of the world cellphone market based on sales in the first quarter of 2008. Samsung and Motorola accounted for 14.4% and 10.2% of the market respectively. <\/p>\n
The report found that worldwide phone sales reached 294.3 million phones in the first quarter of 2008, a 13.6% increase over the first quarter of 2007.<\/p>\n
Of those, Nokia sold 115.2 million mobile phones in the quarter. Samsung racked up sales of 42.4 million phones. <\/p>\n
The biggest loser in the cellphone wars at the moment is Motorola which dived from more than 18% of the sales in the first quarter of 2007 to just over 10% in the first three months of 2008. <\/p>\n
LG overtook Sony Ericsson to become the number four vendor worldwide.<\/p>\n
In the Eastern Europe, the Middle East and African region, more than 56.4 million phones were sold in the period, significant increase of over 25% on the first quarter of 2007.<\/p>\n
