{"id":39919,"date":"2012-01-02T02:05:40","date_gmt":"2012-01-02T00:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=39919"},"modified":"2012-01-02T02:11:07","modified_gmt":"2012-01-02T00:11:07","slug":"data-usage-smartphones-vs-dongles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/39919-data-usage-smartphones-vs-dongles.html","title":{"rendered":"Data usage: Smartphones vs dongles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last twelve months the data consumed by smartphones increased tenfold on the <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> network while data used by dongles only showed moderate growth.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the surprising revelations made by Vodacom CEO <a title=\"Pieter Uys\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/210077-Pieter-Uys\">Pieter Uys<\/a> who addressed the media at an event in Sandton.<\/p>\n<p>Uys revealed that the average data consumed by mobile broadband dongles grew from 500MB to 550MB year-on-year.\u00a0 This translates into a 10% yearly growth in data usage on dongles.<\/p>\n<p>Smartphone data usage in comparison grew by 100% over the same period \u2013 up from 40MB per month to the current 80MB per month.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting statistic is that the ratio of dongle\/smartphone data usage on the Vodacom network changed from 80\/20 last year to the current 60\/40.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for this strong smartphone data usage is twofold: there are far more smartphones on the Vodacom network and smartphone users are consuming significantly more data.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom currently has 1.1 million data dongles on its network, up from 1 million a year ago.\u00a0 In comparison Vodacom has 4.1 million active smartphones on their network.<\/p>\n<p>Uys added that he expects the strong growth in smartphone uptake to continue, especially with the price of Android devices dipping well below R1,000 each.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vodacom provides insight into the data usage patterns and growth on its network<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":29426,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,14],"tags":[35,281,41],"class_list":["post-39919","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadband","category-cellular","tag-headline","tag-pieter-uys","tag-vodacom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39919"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=39919"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39919\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":39921,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39919\/revisions\/39921"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/29426"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=39919"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=39919"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=39919"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
