{"id":399403,"date":"2021-05-30T07:08:19","date_gmt":"2021-05-30T05:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=399403"},"modified":"2021-05-30T07:24:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-30T05:24:14","slug":"harsher-level-2-lockdown-rules-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/trending\/399403-harsher-level-2-lockdown-rules-coming.html","title":{"rendered":"Harsher level 2 lockdown rules coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa is set to return to lockdown level 2 with tougher restrictions on mass gatherings and stricter enforcement of mask wearing in public and social distancing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/citypress\/news\/covid-19-harsh-curbs-coming-20210529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The City Press reported<\/strong><\/a> that the limit on indoor gatherings will be reduced from 250 to 100 people while outdoor gatherings will remain at 500.<\/p>\n<p>There are also plans to extend the curfew from the current 00:00 to 04:00 to 22:00 to 06:00, but business and labour will first be asked for input before these times are finalised.<\/p>\n<p>Good news for the alcohol industry is that an outright ban on the sale of liquor is unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Should there be a surge in hospitalisations, a restriction on the sale of alcohol over weekends could return.<\/p>\n<p>This report comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the nation as the number of Covid-19 cases are rapidly increasing.<\/p>\n<p>Acting minister in the presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said there was growing concern among Ramaphosa\u2019s cabinet around the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The cabinet has discussed further lockdown measures with health officials and Ramaphosa is expected to reveal measures that government will put in place to curb the spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are as cabinet discussing and consulting on the measures to make sure that we protect South Africans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA decision will be taken soon after the consultations and we will announce the date on which the president will hold the family meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health (DoH) said it recommended further lockdown restrictions in a National Coronavirus Command Council meeting on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>DoH spokesperson Popo Maja said they followed the advice from scientists on South Africa\u2019s Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC).<\/p>\n<p>He said the department was greatly concerned about the recent rise in Covid-19 cases, especially as parts of the country have already entered a third wave of infections.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Average-daily-positives.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-399409\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Average-daily-positives.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Average-daily-positives.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Average-daily-positives-600x281.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The number of Covid-19 cases has risen sharply over the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning of April, the number of average Covid-19 daily cases per week was sitting at 789.
