{"id":40175,"date":"2011-12-21T11:25:26","date_gmt":"2011-12-21T09:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=40175"},"modified":"2011-12-21T11:30:15","modified_gmt":"2011-12-21T09:30:15","slug":"rim-rejected-potential-amazon-takeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/40175-rim-rejected-potential-amazon-takeover.html","title":{"rendered":"RIM rejected potential Amazon takeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a <em>Reuters<\/em> report, <a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> maker <a title=\"Research in Motion (RIM)\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313525-Research-in-Motion-%28RIM%29\">Research in Motion<\/a> turned down takeover talk from <a title=\"Amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/356046-Amazon\">Amazon<\/a> and other potential buyers, preferring to try and fix the company themselves according to \u201cpeople with knowledge of the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year Amazon hired an investment bank to review a potential merger with RIM, however it stopped short of making a formal offer. It is still unclear whether a possible price for RIM was discussed.<\/p>\n<p>RIM\u2019s board would prefer that co-chief executives <a title=\"Mike Lazaridis\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/359852-Mike-Lazaridis\">Mike Lazaridis<\/a> and <a title=\"Jim Balsillie\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/331352-Jim-Balsillie\">Jim Balsillie<\/a> attempt to turn the business around in 2012; RIM has seen its fair share of downtime and loss of market share in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The company has seen its market value drop by 77 percent in the last 12 months, now sitting at around $6.8 billion.
