{"id":402803,"date":"2021-06-22T11:28:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T09:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=402803"},"modified":"2021-06-22T11:35:23","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T09:35:23","slug":"level-5-hard-lockdown-for-gauteng-called-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/trending\/402803-level-5-hard-lockdown-for-gauteng-called-for.html","title":{"rendered":"Level 5 hard lockdown for Gauteng called for"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government is considering a move to a higher lockdown level in South Africa, with some experts calling for a hard lockdown in Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/national\/2021-06-21-tighter-covid-19-restrictions-on-the-agenda-for-gauteng-amid-third-wave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Business Day reported<\/strong><\/a> that Gauteng\u2019s provincial command council is meeting today to discuss the possibility of recommending severe restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed restrictions will be similar to what was imposed when the country was under level 4 and 5 lockdowns last year.<\/p>\n<p>A national inter-ministerial committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday to consider the government\u2019s response to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>These meetings come after a rapid increase in Covid-19 cases in Gauteng which is flooding hospitals and putting the healthcare system under strain.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_402807\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Professor-Glenda-Gray.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-402807\" class=\"wp-image-402807 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Professor-Glenda-Gray-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Glenda Gray\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Professor-Glenda-Gray-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Professor-Glenda-Gray-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Professor-Glenda-Gray-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Professor-Glenda-Gray.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-402807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Glenda Gray<\/p><\/div>\n<p>President and CEO of the SA Medical Research Council, Professor Glenda Gray called the situation in Gauteng a \u201ccatastrophe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a shortage of hospital beds, there is not enough oxygen, and there are not enough medical professionals to care for patients,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hear about people being cared for at home, people sitting for two days in a chair waiting for a hospital bed, and about people trying to access oxygen at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a catastrophe and I hope that we are never in the same position again. Professor of Vaccinology at Wits University.<\/p>\n<p>Madhi said Gauteng hospitals are running beyond 100% occupancy, which is partly to blame on the closure of Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital Covid-19 facility has 500 beds ready, but only 100 are commissioned due to staffing shortages.<\/p>\n<p>The situation has reached such crisis levels that military health personnel was deployed to help healthcare professionals in Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p>Madhi and Gray blamed the problems on the Gauteng Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p>They said the department has been cases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.702.co.za\/podcasts\/201\/the-best-of-the-money-show\/525596\/hospitals-managing-over-capacity-caused-by-a-covid-19s-third-wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Speaking to The Money Show\u2019s Bruce Whitfield<\/strong><\/a>, Friedland said the latest Covid-19 case numbers in Gauteng are far worse than what experts predicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese numbers demonstrate absent level 5 lockdown in Gauteng, we will not see the end of this surge for some time to come,\u201d said Friedland.<\/p>\n<p>He said if the government is not willing to impose a hard lockdown, people must self-regulate.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows the number of confirmed daily Covid-19 cases in Gauteng since the pandemic started in also alluded to stricter lockdown rules in the province this week.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cGauteng is burning\u201d and that the province did not want to send out a message that things are fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house is on fire,\u201d he said, adding that the crisis in the province will continue unless people change their behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pandemic is completely out of control and if we have to do extraordinary things, like to ask for further restrictions above level three in Gauteng, it&#8217;s something we must explore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone thinks a move to class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Bruce Mellado<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Professor Bruce Mellado, head of the Gauteng government&#8217;s Covid-19 medical advisory committee, said they have not recommended a harder lockdown for the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is grave in that we have a larger number of active numbers than the second wave. We seem to be two weeks away from the peak and once that happens cases will start going down,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/southafrica\/news\/covid-19-too-late-to-put-in-tighter-restrictions-on-gauteng-experts-20210622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>News24 quoted him as saying<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless we see a new spike, like the one we saw two weeks ago, it&#8217;s not clear that a lockdown is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South African Medical Association (SAMA) head, Dr Angelique Coetzee also thinks there is not much value in stricter lockdown rules now.<\/p>\n<p>She told News24 it&#8217;s too late to put in restrictions now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have done this when SAMA started asking three weeks ago.
