In a statement issued today, the South African Department of Communications (DoC)<\/a> moved the deadline for public comment on its draft spectrum policy from 13 January 2012 to 31 January 2012.<\/p>\n

The full statement was as follows:<\/p>\n

On 14 December 2011, the Minister of Communications Ms Dina Pule<\/a>, published the draft National Radio Frequency Policy Directions for public comment for a period of 30 calendar days.<\/p>\n

Following representations from numerous stakeholders, it has been decided to extend the closing date for submissions on the draft National Radio Frequency Policy Directions to 31 January 2012 in order to provide interested parties with sufficient time to comment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Until the DoC\u2019s policy is finalised, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA)<\/a> can\u2019t proceed with its plans to license high demand spectrum in the 800MHz and 2600MHz bands.<\/p>\n

Many industry players have indicated that the availability and assignment of spectrum in these bands is critical to the rollout of wireless broadband technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MTN<\/a>, Vodacom<\/a>, and 8ta<\/a> have all announced that they are trialling LTE.<\/p>\n
