The feature, which appeared prominently at the top of the app,\u00a0let people share posts that disappeared after 24 hours, a format invented by Snap Inc. and later copied and further popularized by Facebook Inc.\u2019s stable of apps, including Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>But Twitter\u00a0said Wednesday\u00a0in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2021\/goodbye-fleets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0that while it hoped the ephemeral nature of Fleets would encourage more people to post, it was used primarily by people who were already tweeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hoped Fleets would help more people feel comfortable joining the conversation on Twitter,\u201d the company wrote. \u201cBut, in the time since we introduced Fleets to everyone, we haven\u2019t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Disappearing stories have been a popular product for other social media companies, primarily Instagram and Snapchat, where most posts are photos or videos. Tweets, meanwhile, are dominated by text. Twitter said\u00a0it\u2019s looking at building more features into the app\u2019s camera to encourage people to share photos and videos more often.<\/p>\n<p>While Twitter tested running ads in Fleets, the product didn\u2019t drive any meaningful revenue.
