{"id":407594,"date":"2021-07-27T06:45:19","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T04:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=407594"},"modified":"2021-07-27T06:46:38","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T04:46:38","slug":"cyber-attack-on-transnet-causes-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/407594-cyber-attack-on-transnet-causes-chaos.html","title":{"rendered":"Cyber-attack on Transnet causes chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has declared a force majeure following a \u201ccyber-attack, security intrusion and sabotage\u201d on Transnet.<\/p>\n<p>On 22 July 2021, Transnet confirmed it was experiencing a disruption in some of its IT applications. It added that the source of the disruption was identified.<\/p>\n<p>The company would not say it was a victim of a cyber-attack, but many Transnet stakeholders confirmed the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Transnet employees were asked to shut down their laptops, desktops, and tablets connected to the company\u2019s domain. They were also warned not to access emails on their smartphones until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransnet systems have been hacked and compromised. Please disconnect from the Transnet network immediately until advised otherwise,\u201d a follow-on message stated.<\/p>\n<p>The security breach impacted remote access via APN\/VPN and direct access to the system via the office LAN.<\/p>\n<p>Transnet\u2019s Engineering division in Pretoria confirmed all their systems were offline, and everyone who wasn\u2019t working from home had left the offices.<\/p>\n<p>Information shared by industry players showed that Transnet\u2019s websites, IT\u00a0 and NAVIS systems were impacted by the security breach.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_407228\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Jason-OReilly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-407228\" class=\"wp-image-407228 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Jason-OReilly-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Jason-OReilly-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Jason-OReilly-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Jason-OReilly-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Jason-OReilly.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-407228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jayson O&#8217;Reilly, Atvance Intellect, Head of Cyber Security<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jayson O\u2019Reilly, the head of Atvance Intellect\u2019s cybersecurity division, warned that unless Transnet was adequately prepared for a cyberattack, it could take weeks or months to recover its systems.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the attack on Virgin Active in May 2021 caused severe disruptions, and it took six to eight weeks to fully recover.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday morning, the Transnet and Transnet Port Terminals websites were still down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2021-07-26-transnet-cyberattack-puts-employees-salaries-at-risk-while-backlogs-at-ports-mount\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Daily Maverick reported<\/strong><\/a> that the movement in and out of South Africa\u2019s ports remains at a near standstill and that many employees were forced to stop working.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the risk that most of Transnet\u2019s 55,000 employees will not be paid salaries due today, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Transnet emailed staff on Monday, informing them of an \u201cunprecedented attack\u201d that disrupted operations.
