{"id":408600,"date":"2021-08-04T10:03:54","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T08:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=408600"},"modified":"2021-08-04T10:07:24","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T08:07:24","slug":"whatsapp-gets-major-new-feature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/408600-whatsapp-gets-major-new-feature.html","title":{"rendered":"WhatsApp gets major new feature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WhatsApp has announced the launch of View Once, a feature that lets you send photos or videos which can only be opened once before they are deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Once the recipient of the photo or video exits the media viewer, it will no longer be visible in that chat, and they can\u2019t view it again.<\/p>\n<p>View Once photos and videos aren\u2019t saved to the recipient\u2019s Photos or Gallery, and they can\u2019t forward, save, star, or share them.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp has been beta testing the feature <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/404399-whatsapp-rolling-out-new-view-once-feature-for-photos-and-videos.html\"><strong>since the end of June<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It augments WhatsApp\u2019s existing <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/375356-whatsapp-rolls-out-disappearing-messages.html\"><strong>disappearing messages functionality<\/strong><\/a>, which was launched towards the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Those running the latest version of WhatsApp can send view once media by following these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In any chat, tap the camera to take a photo or video, or tap attach to select media to upload from your device.<\/li>\n<li>Tap the new \u201c1\u201d icon that appears next in the message text box.<\/li>\n<li>Tap send.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Videos recorded using WhatsApp are limited to 16MB.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/WhatsApp-View-Once.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-408602\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/WhatsApp-View-Once.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/WhatsApp-View-Once.jpg 890w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/WhatsApp-View-Once-600x334.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/WhatsApp-View-Once-640x356.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/WhatsApp-View-Once-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/iphone\/chats\/how-to-send-and-open-view-once-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/strong> you would see an opened receipt in the chat once the recipient has viewed the photo or video, provided they have read receipts turned on.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t open the photo or video within 14 days of it being sent, the media will expire from the chat.<\/p>\n<p>You must select view once media each time you want to send a view once photo or video.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/faq.whatsapp.com\/general\/chats\/about-view-once\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a><\/strong> that view once media can be restored from backup if the message is unopened at the time of back up.<\/p>\n<p>If the photo or video has already been opened, the media will not be included in the backup and can\u2019t be restored.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp also noted that encrypted media might be stored for a few weeks on WhatsApp\u2019s servers after you\u2019ve sent it.<\/p>\n<p>If a recipient reports view once media, it will be sent to WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>It also warned that someone could take a screenshot, screen recording, photo, or video of the media before it disappears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou won\u2019t be notified if someone takes a screenshot or screen recording,\u201d said WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly send photos or videos with view once media enabled to trusted individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">New feature alert!<\/p>\n<p>You can now send photos and videos that disappear after they\u2019ve been opened via View Once on WhatsApp, giving you more control over your chats privacy!
