The Bhisho-based station broadcast from the mall throughout the day. <\/p>\n
They used computers equipped with Internet access to show the audience how to log onto their website, www.trufm.co.za. <\/p>\n
The station’s marketing manager, Siphelele Sixaso, was on hand to handle screaming fans by showing them how to surf the Net and how to chat to the station’s DJs online.<\/p>\n
Sixaso, who described the website as “fresh, vibey and up to date”, said the experience had made him realise how hungry Mdantsane youth were for knowledge, and how quickly they were able to learn. <\/p>\n
“Some had never touched a computer in their lives, but within two minutes of showing them the way, they were already chatting to our DJ. <\/p>\n
“This alone made the station’s launch a success, because we are here not only to entertain, but also to educate our youth – and we did that at the mall,” he said.<\/p>\n
He said they thought the Mdantsane City Mall would be a good venue to introduce the website to the listeners.<\/p>\n
The youth in Mdantsane needed exposure to technology, he added, suggesting that Internet cafes could go some way towards increasing this exposure . <\/p>\n
“This was a sign for us that when the youth is exposed, they learn quickly and advance accordingly, and that Mdantsane has very bright young people,” he added.<\/p>\n
He said the website was a tool to assist in information- sharing with their listeners, as well as a tool that could be used to encourage interaction between the public and the DJs.<\/p>\n
On the website, you can find news, information about the station, presenters’ profiles, the station’s profile, show profiles, competitions, a gig guide, blogs and youth-related topics. You can also listen live.<\/p>\n
The crowd could not get enough of seeing their favourite trufm DJs in their neighbourhood. Andile Mendi from NU9 said he loved listening to the station, and that he had never used a computer before. The experience, though, had left him interested in learning more about computers. <\/p>\n
“I am so happy that trufm is here, and I got a good look at how the computer allows you to look at places and listen to the station,” said Mendi.<\/p>\n
Another listener said she was happy to have seen the DJs, but was disappointed because her favourite, DJ Pastor, was not there.<\/p>\n
