Issues such as how far the keys travel and how loudly they click all play a part in his choice.

I’m a big fan of Microsoft keyboards and the latest Microsoft Wireless Desktop 7000 didn’t disappoint. The keys are a bit "softer" than older MS keyboards, so if you use both a laptop and desktop computer, it won’t make you feel out of place when using the desktop.

The mouse that comes with the set is a relatively standard high-end mouse with the normal two buttons plus a scroll wheel and two buttons on the side.

It’s also rechargeable, so it should save you a few cents in batteries. The keyboard – which uses normal AA batteries – is littered with more keys than you could imagine.

All the function keys are mapped to specific functions and even then there are another 20 buttons around the rim of the keyboard – which is made of a rather pretty, smoked effect, transparent plastic.

Microsoft has also been rather smart and on the Control Key it’s added a *. Then on the side of each of the keys that have a secondary function (such as Control C for copy) it’s printed the secondary function (*Copy in this case). Considering how many people don’t know the keyboard shortcuts, it’s a clever addition that adds no cost to the device itself. In fact, the only criticism I can think of is that the shiny plastic used for the main body of the keyboard is prone to showing dust easily and I found that quite distracting.

The letters on the keys seem to be "silk-screened". Under my desk lamp they become a bit shiny and it looks like you can see the clear surround of the words. That was also somewhat distracting. But then again, maybe I should learn to touch type so I don’t need to look at the keyboard.

Keyboard and mouse comments

Finweek

[15

post-4110","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-hardware
