{"id":412038,"date":"2021-08-31T13:26:38","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T11:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=412038"},"modified":"2021-08-31T13:28:20","modified_gmt":"2021-08-31T11:28:20","slug":"self-driving-buses-back-online-in-tokyo-after-hitting-paralympic-athlete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/motoring\/412038-self-driving-buses-back-online-in-tokyo-after-hitting-paralympic-athlete.html","title":{"rendered":"Self-driving buses back online in Tokyo after hitting Paralympic athlete"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toyota will resume the use of its self-driving buses, e-Palette Pods, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games today after one hit a visually impaired athlete.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/aug\/28\/toyota-pauses-paralympics-self-driving-buses-after-one-hits-visually-impaired-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian reported<\/a><\/strong> that the Paralympian, Aramitsu Kitazono, was not severely injured but was forced to drop out of the Games\u2019 judo event on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The incident prompted a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QJXhG_hFNK4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public apology<\/a><\/strong> from Akio Toyoda, Toyota\u2019s Chief Executive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very sorry that the accident has made many people worried,\u201d Toyoda said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vehicle is stronger than a person, so I was obviously worried about how they were. It shows that autonomous vehicles are not yet realistic for normal roads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese car manufacturer temporarily suspended the self-driving bus service and apologised for the \u201coverconfidence\u201d of the self-driving vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vehicle&#8217;s sensor detected the pedestrian crossing and activated the automatic brake, and the operator also activated the emergency brake.
