{"id":41519,"date":"2012-01-18T14:02:27","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T12:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=41519"},"modified":"2012-01-18T15:59:31","modified_gmt":"2012-01-18T13:59:31","slug":"smartphone-data-usage-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/41519-smartphone-data-usage-in-sa.html","title":{"rendered":"Smartphone data usage in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to statistics presented by <a title=\"Google Inc\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314567-Google\">Google<\/a> last year (2011) from the Our Mobile Planet survey results, South Africa\u2019s smartphone penetration is around 15%.<\/p>\n<p>Other surveys and statistics from operators indicated that <a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> has the greatest smartphone market share in SA, followed by <a title=\"Nokia\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314603-Nokia-Corporation\">Nokia\u2019s<\/a> Symbian smartphone operating system (OS).<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s Android and Apple\u2019s iOS mobile platforms are also making inroads, but BlackBerry, Symbian, and even Windows Mobile still had greater market share in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s widely reported that smartphones drive data usage on mobile networks, but just how much data does each platform eat through on average?<\/p>\n<p>Of all the networks we asked, only Vodacom were willing to give actual statistics. They didn\u2019t want to reveal any competitor-sensitive information either, so they provided a per-platform breakdown for November 2011:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>iOS: 219MB\/month<\/li>\n<li>BlackBerry: 169MB\/month<\/li>\n<li>Android: 153MB\/month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> CEO <a title=\"Pieter Uys\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/210077-Pieter-Uys\">Pieter Uys<\/a> previously revealed that the average data consumption over the 4.1 million smartphones on their network had increased from 40MB to 80MB in the last six months of 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a> said that they\u2019ve seen a significant increase in data usage from both the consumer and business sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst modem uptake remains moderate, smartphones are taking the lead, with the BlackBerry operating systems remaining the dominant player,\u201d MTN said.<\/p>\n<p>MTN added that when they looked into the other operating systems, they noticed that the <a title=\"Android Mobile Oerating System\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/221979-Google-Android\">Android<\/a> OS growth has been slower than anticipated, but the \u201cindicators and trends looking forward are positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"8ta\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/276092-8ta\">8ta<\/a> said that they couldn\u2019t provide a per-platform breakdown of data usage. \u201cHowever, we are working on the reporting requirements to provide this intelligence going forward,\u201d 8ta said.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> and <a title=\"Virgin Mobile SA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/309707-Virgin-Mobile\">Virgin Mobile<\/a> did not provide feedback by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Related articles<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Data usage: Smartphones vs dongles (on Vodacom)\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/39919-data-usage-smartphones-vs-dongles.html\"><strong>Data usage: Smartphones vs dongles (on Vodacom)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Most popular mobile OS and smartphone brand in SA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/38267-most-popular-mobile-os-and-smartphone-brand-in-sa.html\"><strong>Most popular mobile OS and smartphone brand in SA<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Smartphone usage stats: SA versus the world\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/38101-smartphone-usage-stats-sa-versus-the-world.html\"><strong>Smartphone usage stats: SA versus the world<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Smartphone data usage in South Africa - March 2011\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/19373-smartphone-data-usage-in-south-africa-revealed.html\"><strong>Smartphone data usage in South Africa &#8211;
