YouTube will no longer show the number of \u201cdislikes\u201d on videos, an attempt to make the platform more hospitable to creators.<\/p>\n
For years, YouTube has relied on the tiny thumbs below each video as a metric for ranking content.<\/p>\n
Viewers often used the thumbs-down button to torment or harass certain creators \u2014 worse engagement metrics can mean less promotion by the platform\u2019s algorithm.<\/p>\n
During tests, YouTube said it found that hiding the display count cut down on this practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also heard directly from smaller creators and those just getting started that they are unfairly targeted by this behavior,\u201d the company wrote in a blog post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The button itself isn\u2019t going away \u2014 only the public view of the count.<\/p>\n
YouTube, part of Alphabet Inc.\u2019s Google, needs to keep creators happy because it\u2019s facing its first real competition for talent in years from rivals like Instagram, TikTok and Spotify.<\/p>\n
Meta Platforms Inc.\u2019s Instagram let users hide\u00a0their like counts on posts earlier this year, responding to criticism about the stress the feature places on young users.<\/p>\n
Susan Wojcicki, YouTube\u2019s chief executive officer,\u00a0said in September\u00a0that YouTube was a \u201creally valuable resource\u201d for teenage mental health. The company has pledged to provide more internal research on the subject to U.S. Congress.<\/p>\n
The YouTube video with the most dislikes ever actually belongs to YouTube. In 2018, the company\u2019s annual marketing promo, YouTube Rewind, was\u00a0widely ridiculed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by top creators and fans.
