{"id":422350,"date":"2021-11-11T12:36:06","date_gmt":"2021-11-11T10:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=422350"},"modified":"2021-11-11T12:39:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-11T10:39:07","slug":"massive-improvement-in-eskom-breakdowns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/422350-massive-improvement-in-eskom-breakdowns.html","title":{"rendered":"Massive improvement in Eskom breakdowns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Breakdowns at Eskom&#8217;s power plants have reduced to 11,224MW, and planned maintenance is 7,030MW of capacity, the power utility <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Eskom_SA\/status\/1458732813423984641\">announced<\/a><\/strong> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>This 18,254MW of total electricity generation downtime is a tremendous improvement <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/421554-eskom-stage-4-load-shedding-and-blackouts-all-weekend.html\"><strong>from last Friday<\/strong><\/a>, when close to 21,798MW of Eskom&#8217;s generating capacity was unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eskom, total unavailability over the past week peaked at close to 22,500MW.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom head of maintenance Paula Goatley <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/421656-eskom-under-siege.html\"><strong>told City Press<\/strong><\/a> that she hadn&#8217;t seen such massive unavailability figures in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Unplanned outages have decreased by a whopping 6,689MW from the 17,933MW of breakdowns <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/420938-stage-2-load-shedding-tonight-but-expect-it-to-get-worse.html\"><strong>reported last week Tuesday<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Load-shedding late last week was caused by a breakdown of one unit at Eskom&#8217;s Tutuka power station and Kendall power station&#8217;s inability to generate power due to a broken coal conveyor.<\/p>\n<p>The problems Eskom faced this week included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A major incident in Zambia resulted in the imported power from Cahora Bassa being reduced by 1,000MW.<\/li>\n<li>A Tutuka generator tripped.<\/li>\n<li>Generation units at the Medupi and Matla power stations tripped.<\/li>\n<li>A unit at Tutuka power station was forced to shut down.<\/li>\n<li>Three units at Kendal went offline following a power fault with its coal conveyor belt.<\/li>\n<li>There were further delays in returning a unit each at Lethabo and Majuba power stations.<\/li>\n<li>There is a shortage of diesel to run the open-cycle gas turbines, limiting Eskom&#8217;s ability to generate additional emergency power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eskom&#8217;s statement about the generation capacity improvements followed an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/energy\/422308-load-shedding-changes-for-rest-of-the-week.html\">online media briefing<\/a><\/strong> where CEO Andr\u00e9 de Ruyter said that load-shedding would be reduced from stage 3 to stage 2 at noon on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The power utility expects to suspend rotational power cuts entirely from Friday at 05:00.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom said it could suspend load-shedding early because many of the units that had suffered breakdowns over the past two weeks had returned to service.<\/p>\n<p>It has also seen sufficient recovery in emergency generation reserves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The improved demand response for different stages of load-shedding has also enabled faster than anticipated recovery,&#8221;
