However there are some signs that its dominance is abating as the rate of addition has been slowing over the last few quarters,” the report states.

“Adding over 30 million new lines in a year, over 12 million more than fibre to the premise (FTTx) in second place, however shows that DSL will be with us for a few years yet.”

FTTx added just under 19 million lines in Q3 2011. This is more than double the number in the same period last year and it is still accelerating.

“At the moment it is a long way ahead of its stablemate, FTTP, with more than 10 times the growth in the quarter and continuing to increase the gap in subscriber numbers.”

“FTTx will be where the action is over the next few years. Consumers are showing signs of being ready to pay for faster connections and combined with the relatively high deployment cost of FTTP v FTTx the hybrid solution set is the best way of getting relatively high speeds to them,” the Point-Topic report states.

Net adds by Technology by quarter and year

Latest Point-Topic report reveals that DSL continued to dominate the global broadband arena, but FTTx is getting closer

[4
891,889,35,2618
post-42435","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadband","tag-ftth","tag-fttx","tag-headline","tag-point-topic
