{"id":42525,"date":"2012-01-31T17:24:56","date_gmt":"2012-01-31T15:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=42525"},"modified":"2012-02-01T10:47:54","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T08:47:54","slug":"google-kenya-boss-gone-over-mocality-sting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/42525-google-kenya-boss-gone-over-mocality-sting.html","title":{"rendered":"Google Kenya boss gone over Mocality sting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The head of <a title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314567-Google\">Google\u2019s<\/a> Kenyan operations has reportedly left the company after online business directory <a title=\"Mocality\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/400629-Mocality\">Mocality<\/a> accused the search giant of dodgy business practices in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Mocality head Stefan Magdalinski presented evidence on Mocality\u2019s blog showing that not only was Google in violation of their terms of use by scraping its business directory, call centre agents were claiming Google had a relationship with Mocality when it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson Mattos, Google vice-president for product and engineering in Europe and Emerging Markets, responded to the allegations with the following statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We were mortified to learn that a team of people working on a Google project improperly used Mocality\u2019s data and misrepresented our relationship with Mocality to encourage customers to create new websites. We\u2019ve already unreservedly apologised to Mocality. We\u2019re still investigating exactly how this happened, and as soon as we have all the facts, we\u2019ll be taking the appropriate action with the people involved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mattos has since revealed that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/u\/0\/115264064268941645500\/posts\/T43MtzPV7Xh\" target=\"_blank\">Google has concluded its investigation<\/a>\u00a0and had \u201ctaken appropriate action with the people involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019ve concluded our investigation into the serious allegations about our use of data from Mocality\u2019s website in Kenya. We\u2019re very sorry this happened. We\u2019ve taken appropriate action with the people involved and made changes in our operations to ensure this doesn\u2019t occur again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This has lead to reports based on information published by the blog\u00a0<a title=\"Olga Arara out in Google Mocality saga\" href=\"http:\/\/nairobitech.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/olga-arara-out-in-google-mocality-saga.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nairobitech<\/a>\u00a0that the head of Google Kenya, Olga Arara-Kimani, had been axed along with \u201ca technical guy\u201d in Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>However, Kenyan newspaper\u00a0<a title=\"Google-Kenya boss exits as data scam purge takes toll\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/business\/news\/Google+Kenya+boss+exits+as+data+scam+purge+takes+toll+\/-\/1006\/1316954\/-\/11c0iafz\/-\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Nation reported that Arara-Kimani had left of her own accord<\/a>, quoting her as saying: \u201cI felt that the buck stopped with me and I decided to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether Arara-Kimani had indeed left and what the nature of her exit was, Dorothy Ooko, communications &amp; public affairs for East &amp; Francophone at Google, said: \u201cIt is true that Olga is no longer with the company.
