{"id":426032,"date":"2021-12-03T09:05:32","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T07:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=426032"},"modified":"2021-12-03T09:11:03","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T07:11:03","slug":"microsofts-dna-storage-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/426032-microsofts-dna-storage-breakthrough.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft&#8217;s DNA storage breakthrough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In collaboration with the University of Washington\u2019s Molecular Information Systems Laboratory (MISL), Microsoft has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.abi6714#pill-authors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a><\/strong> the first nanoscale DNA storage writer.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Gizmodo <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/microsoft-makes-breakthrough-in-the-quest-to-use-dna-as-1848149522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a><\/strong>, the breakthrough is the first indication of achieving the write speeds needed for DNA storage.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft and the MISL announced the breakthrough in a research paper, indicating that the technology should scale to a DNA write density of 25 x 10<sup>6<\/sup> sequences per square centimetre.<\/p>\n<p>This write density is 1,000x tighter than before.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has been working on DNA data storage technologies to give it an advantage over its competition. These promise exceptional density, life span, and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>According to Gizmodo, DNA\u2019s density is capable of storing 1 exabyte (1 billion gigabytes) per square inch \u2014 equivalent to approximately 155 million gigabytes per square centimetre.<\/p>\n<p>The International Data Corporation expects data storage requirements will reach nine zettabytes (nine trillion gigabytes) by 2024.<\/p>\n<p>According to Microsoft, one zettabyte of storage space is equivalent to installing Windows 11 on 15 billion PCs.<\/p>\n<p>Comparatively, nine zettabytes of information could be stored in an area as small as a fridge if DNA storage was used.<\/p>\n<p>Another benefit of DNA storage is its life span.
