{"id":426256,"date":"2021-12-06T10:45:48","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T08:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=426256"},"modified":"2021-12-06T10:46:26","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T08:46:26","slug":"microsoft-rolls-back-controversial-default-browser-setting-on-windows-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/426256-microsoft-rolls-back-controversial-default-browser-setting-on-windows-11.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft rolls back controversial default browser setting on Windows 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft has reversed a change in Windows 11&#8217;s Settings that made it more difficult for users to choose a default browser other than Edge.<\/p>\n<p>EarTrumpet Windows app developer Rafael Rivera <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WithinRafael\/status\/1466183359680299009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>recently discovered<\/strong><\/a> that the new test build of Windows 11 lets users set Chome, Firefox, or any other browser to the default with a single button.<\/p>\n<p>This is much simpler than the previous implementation, which required users to set the default for each file extension or protocol handler (HTTPS, HTTP, .html, and .htm.) that a browser can open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/12\/3\/22815209\/microsoft-windows-11-default-browser-button-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Microsoft confirmed to The Verge<\/strong><\/a> that the change was intentional and is being tested.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Windows build 22509 has a new browser [Set default] button. &#x1f440; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kRDFPKfJMv\">pic.twitter.com\/kRDFPKfJMv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rafael Rivera (@WithinRafael) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WithinRafael\/status\/1466183359680299009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Many users have complained that breaking down the default option by four categories seemed like an attempt to make it more difficult to switch from Microsoft&#8217;s own Edge browser.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the company previously claimed it was &#8220;implementing customer feedback to customise and control defaults at a more granular level&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has been taking flak in recent months over its methods to discourage people running Windows 10 or Windows 11 to use browsers other than Edge.<\/p>\n<p>Like with previous versions of Windows, Edge is the only browser installed by default.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Neowin has also observed that users <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/425918-microsoft-desperate-to-keep-users-on-edge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>were receiving natively-rendered prompts<\/strong><\/a> in Edge to users who try to download Google&#8217;s Chrome browser to persuade them to stick to Edge.<\/p>\n<p>These messages included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;That browser is so 2008! Do you know what&#8217;s new? Microsoft Edge.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;&#8216;I hate saving money,&#8217; said no one ever.
