{"id":426336,"date":"2021-12-06T15:22:04","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T13:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=426336"},"modified":"2021-12-06T15:23:10","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T13:23:10","slug":"e-zimbabwe-dollar-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cryptocurrency\/426336-e-zimbabwe-dollar-plan.html","title":{"rendered":"e-Zimbabwe dollar plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zimbabwe\u2019s central bank is exploring the use of a digital currency rather than allowing cryptocurrencies as legal tender, according to the nation\u2019s central bank Governor John Mangudya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a central bank we don\u2019t believe in cryptocurrencies,\u201d said Mangudya in an interview with publisher Trevor Ncube broadcast Monday. \u201cWe believe in central bank digital currency which is basically trying to say \u2018how do we have an e-Zimbabwe dollar as opposed to cryptocurrency\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The southern African nation plans to send a team to Nigeria to learn from their experiences in launching the first digital currency in Africa in October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have got our fintech group and they are working very hard,\u201d he said. \u201cMost central banks in the world are working on this CBDC and we are definitely almost there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mangudya also said the government had decided to pay annual bonuses to civil servants in U.S. dollars instead of the local currency as using the Zimbabwean dollar could have added to its recent depreciation.<\/p>\n<p>The official rate for the Zimbabwean currency was last at Z$105, having weakened by 29% this year.
