Webmail claims to be the first African service provider to offer 10GB of free storage space to each of its users. <\/p>\n
Webmail currently has 750 000 active email subscribers and is re-launching its service in July. The new Webmail will boast a “range of applications designed to suit a variety of internet user profiles”, the company says.<\/p>\n
This includes voice and videomail, a feature that helps visually-impaired communicate via mainstream communication. Other applications that have been introduced to the site include webchat, an instant messaging system that enables users to chat online or from a cellphone. Webmail will also offer a fax to email service.<\/p>\n
"Right now South Africans could do with a little extra for free," says Dennis Armstrong, marketing and business development director for Interface Media, Webmail’s holding company. <\/p>\n
"We’ve got the platform to offer it, and are bringing even more value to the table. This climate is an ideal opportunity to show why we’re different."<\/p>\n
Most free email providers have come under pressure from Google’s entrance into the market through its Gmail offering. This prompted many webmail providers, including Yahoo and Hotmail, to follow suit by upping the size of their email accounts.<\/p>\n
According to the Website Association of South Africa (WASA), Webmail is currently the fifth largest website in South Africa, one place below Hotmail ZA.<\/p>\n
