{"id":431340,"date":"2022-01-25T09:57:27","date_gmt":"2022-01-25T07:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=431340"},"modified":"2022-01-25T09:57:56","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T07:57:56","slug":"james-webb-space-telescope-reaches-final-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/431340-james-webb-space-telescope-reaches-final-orbit.html","title":{"rendered":"James Webb Space Telescope reaches final orbit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/webb\/2022\/01\/24\/orbital-insertion-burn-a-success-webb-arrives-at-l2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a><\/strong> that the James Webb Telescope has reached its final orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2).<\/p>\n<p>At this point, the James Webb Space Telescope sits more than 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Webb, welcome home!&#8221; NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said upon its arrival at L2.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Congratulations to the team for all of their hard work ensuring Webb&#8217;s safe arrival at L2 today. We&#8217;re one step closer to uncovering the mysteries of the universe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first images from the telescope will only be available later this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I can&#8217;t wait to see Webb&#8217;s first new views of the universe this summer!&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#x1f3e0; Home, home on Lagrange! It will orbit the Sun, in line with Earth, as it orbits L2. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bsIU3vccAj\">https:\/\/t.co\/bsIU3vccAj<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UnfoldTheUniverse?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UnfoldTheUniverse<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WDhuANEP5h\">pic.twitter.com\/WDhuANEP5h<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NASA Webb Telescope (@NASAWebb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASAWebb\/status\/1485695028622209032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The positioning of the space telescope is essential as it provides an unobstructed view from a cold and interference-free location.<\/p>\n<p>The telescope must remain in a cool location as it relies on its infrared image processors to snap photographs in space.<\/p>\n<p>NASA <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/429460-james-webb-space-telescope-achieves-full-deployment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">successfully deployed<\/a><\/strong> the James Webb Telescope&#8217;s mirror on 8 January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The successful unfolding of its mirror was a huge relief to NASA. Not only was the mission 20 years in the making, but the agency said it was also the most complicated deployment it has ever undertaken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Webb observatory has 50 major deployments \u2026 and 178 release mechanisms to deploy those 50 parts,&#8221; mission systems engineer Mike Menzel explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every single one of them must work.
