{"id":432582,"date":"2022-02-03T07:22:24","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T05:22:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=432582"},"modified":"2022-02-03T07:38:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T05:38:18","slug":"r4-9-billion-crypto-heist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cryptocurrency\/432582-r4-9-billion-crypto-heist.html","title":{"rendered":"R4.9-billion crypto heist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wormhole, a communication bridge between Solana and other decentralized-finance blockchain networks, said hackers stole about $320 million (R4.9 billion) in cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>The online thieves made away with 120,000 wETH, or so-called wrapped Ether, the project\u2019s team\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\/status\/1489001949881978883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>They pledged to add Ether over the next several hours to ensure the wETH is backed one-for-one and get the network back up. The post didn\u2019t elaborate on where they would get the Ether.<\/p>\n<p>The vulnerability has been patched, they said in a follow-up\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\/status\/1489036273012682753?cxt=HHwWgsC96bumj6opAAAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis demonstrates once again that the security of DeFi services has not reached a level that is appropriate for the huge sums being stored within them,\u201d said Tom Robinson, co-founder of blockchain analysis firm\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/blog\/325-million-stolen-from-wormhole-defi-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elliptic.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe transparency of the blockchain is allowing attackers to identify and exploit major bugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hack is likely one of the largest thefts from a DeFi protocol, which bill themselves as allowing users to bypass traditional intermediaries to borrow and lend digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>About 96,000 of the wETH tokens have been sent to the Ethereum blockchain, according to another forensics provider, TRM Labs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-social-embedded\" data-social-media-type=\"twitter\" data-original-url=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\/statuses\/1489001949881978883\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The wormhole network was exploited for 120k wETH.<\/p>\n<p>ETH will be added over the next hours to ensure wETH is backed 1:1. Thanks for your patience.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Wormhole (@wormholecrypto)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\/status\/1489001949881978883?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNo onward movement yet, but we are tracking the situation,\u201d TRM said.<\/p>\n<p>Wormhole developers offered the hacker a $10 million bug bounty for exploit details and the return of the funds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-03\/quant-shop-jump-capital-buys-blockchain-engineer-firm-certus-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jump Trading Group<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0announced in August that it bought Certus One, which helped develop Wormhole.<\/p>\n<p>Jump has said it is a founding code contributor to Wormhole.<\/p>\n<p>Certus One offers infrastructure services for proof-of-stake blockchains and has been an active participant in decentralized networks including Cosmos, Terra, Solana and next-generation Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>A representative for Jump Trading didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Wormhole hack adds to a slew of problems for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-01\/solana-adds-payment-feature-amid-crypto-network-congestion-woes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solana<\/a>,<\/strong> the blockchain that brags lower transaction fees than main rival Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, Solana was down for 17 hours after attacks by trading software bots.
