The tests were conducted inside the building and outside in the parking lot — about 80 meters from the access points.

Inside the office, the antennas had a similar performance. When we went outside, however, the difference became apparent.

The TP-Link router antenna with the reflector stole the show with the best performance.

Without the reflector, the link speeds reported by Windows dropped slightly, and the weakest network was no longer visible.

Another setup that performed well was the basic antenna with a Windsurfer reflector. While it could only connect to the strongest network, it was still a significant improvement compared to not having the Windsurfer reflector.

The rest of the antennas yielded similar performances, most likely because they were not tuned at the frequency being used.

If your router or adapter supports an external antenna, using one from another router may provide a significant improvement in signal strength and range.

With minimal effort, you can build and add a simple reflector which will add a big performance improvement.

The table below provides an overview of the performance of the different configurations.

Wi-Fi Antenna Comparison

Antenna

Components Needed

Strongest network link speed

Middle network link speed

Weakest network link speed

TP-Link + Windsurfer

Free antenna from old router + foil + cardboard

28 Mbps

57 Mbps

Unable to connect

TP-Link

Free antenna from old router

21 Mbps

43 Mbps

Network not visible

Standard + Windsurfer

Foil + Cardboard

28 Mbps

Unable to connect

Network not visible

5 Element Yagi

Halfwave Dipole + Cardboard + Copper Wire

21 Mbps

Unable to connect

Unable to connect

Moxon Rectangle

SMA pigtail + Cardboard + Copper Wire

21 Mbps

Unable to connect

Unable to connect

Half-Wave Dipole

SMA connector + Copper Wire

14 Mbps

Unable to connect

Network not visible

RC antenna

Free from RC radio

14 Mbps

Unable to connect

Network not visible

Standard Antenna

Free with Wi-Fi Adapter

Unable to connect

Unable to connect

Network not visible

Now read: Light bulb efficiency tested — and the winner is clear

MyBroadband tested a few low budget DIY options to improve your Wi-Fi reception, and one of the cheapest options produced the best results.

[13
35,749,76556
post-433782","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wireless","tag-headline","tag-wi-fi","tag-wi-fi-antennas
