MXit<\/a> recently revealed that they currently have around 50 million registered users, with 10 million active users in South Africa alone.<\/p>\n

MXit CEO Alan Knott-Craig Junior<\/a> said that they receive between 35,000 and 50,000 new registrations daily \u2013 mainly from African and developing countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Indonesia.<\/p>\n

With 750 million daily messages Knott-Craig may well be justified in claiming to be Africa’s largest social network.<\/p>\n

Dubious Android market claims<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the figures listed by Knott-Craig grabbed the attention of some observers. The MXit CEO claimed that MXit was the ‘third most downloaded app in the Android<\/a> marketplace’.<\/p>\n

Some users were quick to highlight that this is simply not the case, pointing out that apps like Facebook<\/a> had between 100 million and 500 million installs while MXit has only had between 100,000 and 500,000 installs.<\/p>\n

It is clear that there was a misunderstanding from MXit about the Android market statistics, and Knott-Craig confirmed that a mistake slipped in.<\/p>\n

MXit is currently ranked at number 5 in “Top Free in Apps” in the local app market \u2013 a position which makes more sense than a global top ranking.<\/p>\n

Knott-Craig explained that he received an email from the US a while ago that MXit was ranked as the third most download app in the Android market, and that he used that information as the basis for his claims. Knott-Craig however committed to rectify this mistake.<\/p>\n

Impressive growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

MXit’s continued growth is impressive considering the increased competition from other messaging systems like BBM<\/a> (BlackBerry<\/a> Messenger) and WhatsApp Messenger.<\/p>\n

Bearing in mind that MXit grew its number of registered users from 40 million to 50 million in just four months, with the number of messages growing by 50 million per day over the same period, MXit is clearly providing a service which the younger generation like.<\/p>\n

Future challenges for MXit include extending its user base to an older demographic, growing their revenue streams and serving as a payment platform.<\/p>\n

All these issues appear to be on Knott-Craig’s radar and part of his future plans for the company, and if he gets it right he may well sit on the goldmine which he believes MXit is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
