{"id":436122,"date":"2022-03-02T21:21:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T19:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=436122"},"modified":"2022-03-02T21:26:36","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T19:26:36","slug":"dstv-drops-rt-news-channel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/436122-dstv-drops-rt-news-channel.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv drops RT news channel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russian state-controlled news channel RT is no longer available on DStv and TelkomONE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, 2 March 2021, Russia Today (Channel 407) shall not be carried on the DStv platform until further notice,\u201d MultiChoice said in a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union have led to the global distributor of the channel ceasing to provide the broadcast feed to all suppliers, including MultiChoice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RT is a Russian state-controlled international television network funded by the tax budget of the Russian government.<\/p>\n<p>It operates pay television or free-to-air channels directed to audiences outside of Russia and provides Internet content in English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, and Russian.<\/p>\n<p>The DStv RT blackout follows the European Union\u2019s (EU\u2019s) ban on RT, which became effective today.<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s ban involves wide-ranging sanctions on the distribution of RT and its subsidiaries, including the broadcast, online channels, and the RT app.<\/p>\n<p>It announced the ban on Sunday, and countries signed off on it today after a formal proposal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/RT-blocked.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-436126\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/RT-blocked.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/RT-blocked.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/RT-blocked-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/RT-blocked-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, social media networks acted against Russian state media, including RT and Sputnik, in anticipation of the ban.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/436000-youtube-facebook-tiktok-restricting-russian-state-media.html\"><strong>restricted state-controlled Russian media channels<\/strong><\/a>, aiming to curtail propaganda during Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter also announced earlier this week that it would begin <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/435588-twitter-will-label-all-links-from-state-backed-russian-media.html\"><strong>labelling all links<\/strong><\/a> from state-backed Russian outlets shared on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>The label identifies the links as \u201cRussia state-affiliated media\u201d.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/435980-dstv-cuts-four-channels.html\">DStv cuts four channels<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice has abruptly cut RT, formerly known as Russia Today, from DStv.
