{"id":437676,"date":"2022-03-24T18:56:49","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T16:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=437676"},"modified":"2022-03-24T19:00:40","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T17:00:40","slug":"using-solar-panels-to-charge-your-smartphone-impressive-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/smartphones\/437676-using-solar-panels-to-charge-your-smartphone-impressive-results.html","title":{"rendered":"Using solar panels to charge your smartphone \u2014 impressive results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MyBroadband tested two solar smartphone chargers, and the results showed that it is a viable option when you do not have electricity or a power bank.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s unstable electricity supply and regular power outages forced people to look for alternative sources to charge their phones.<\/p>\n<p>Outdoor enthusiasts are also forced to invest in power banks or solar chargers to ensure their smartphones don\u2019t run out of juice.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone knows that power banks are reliable and affordable, but what about solar chargers?<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband tested three solar panel phone chargers to see if they can keep your devices running during the day.<\/p>\n<p>We ordered two products from Takealot:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An 8-Watt unit for R199.<\/li>\n<li>A 14-Watt foldable unit, marketed as a camping product, for R899.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The chargers were shipped quickly and arrived in nice packaging the next day.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-437682\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The build quality of the cheaper panel is fair and is a bit larger than expected. It has a built-in stand to set it up at an angle with a long USB A cable.<\/p>\n<p>It also includes a splitter cable with other ports, including USB C, mini-USB, micro-USB, and two DC jacks.<\/p>\n<p>The more expensive unit is more robust with tough fabric construction. The USB port is attached to the rear alongside a pocket to store your phone while charging.<\/p>\n<p>It is slightly smaller than half the size of the cheap panel when folded up. When unfolded, it is more than double the length.<\/p>\n<p>The more expensive panel did not include a USB cable. However, this should not be a problem as any charging cable can be used with the panel.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-437684\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Solar-panel-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We tested the panels around 14:00 on a sunny day to gauge their real-world performance and maximum power output.<\/p>\n<p>The panels provided stable power, which should be safe to use with any USB device.<\/p>\n<p>The cheap panel was very easy to set up to point directly at the sun.
