{"id":438872,"date":"2022-03-26T07:58:32","date_gmt":"2022-03-26T05:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=438872"},"modified":"2022-03-26T08:21:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-26T06:21:33","slug":"kaspersky-placed-on-us-security-risk-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/438872-kaspersky-placed-on-us-security-risk-list.html","title":{"rendered":"Kaspersky placed on US security risk list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. placed internet-security provider AO Kaspersky Lab on a list of companies deemed a threat to national security, for the first time adding a Russian entity to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/supplychain\/coveredlist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a list<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>dominated by Chinese telecommunications firms.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Communications Commission on Friday also added China Telecom (Americas) Corp, and China Mobile International USA Inc. to the list.<\/p>\n<p>Once a company is on the list, federal subsidies can\u2019t be used to purchase its equipment or services.<\/p>\n<p>The action is part of the FCC\u2019s efforts to \u201cstrengthen America\u2019s communications networks against national security threats,\u201d Jessica Rosenworcel, the agency\u2019s chairwoman, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>She earlier warned of possible cyber attacks following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Kaspersky is a well known provider of anti-virus software, and has conducted investigations into a range of nation-state hacking incidents.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usa.kaspersky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>calls itself<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the world\u2019s largest privately-owned cybersecurity company on its website.<\/p>\n<p>It says it\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.kaspersky.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protects<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0more than 400 million users and 240,000 companies.<\/p>\n<p>The company in a statement said it was \u201cdisappointed\u201d with the FCC\u2019s action, calling it \u201ca response to the geopolitical climate rather than a comprehensive evaluation of the integrity of Kaspersky\u2019s products and services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaspersky will continue to assure its partners and customers on the quality and integrity of its products,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government in 2017\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2017-09-13\/u-s-bans-use-of-kaspersky-software-by-all-federal-agencies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banned use<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of Kaspersky software in federal information systems, citing concerns about the Moscow-based security firm\u2019s links to the Russian government and espionage efforts.<\/p>\n<p>A White House official in 2017 said having Kaspersky software on U.S. networks presented \u201can unacceptable risk\u201d mainly because Russian law requires the company to collaborate with its main spy agency, the FSB.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/announcement-additions-covered-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friday said<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the 2017 action persuaded it that \u201cKaspersky-branded products pose an unacceptable risk to the national security\u201d of the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC has been increasing its focus on Russian telecommunications since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.<\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 25, Rosenworcel\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.fcc.gov%2Fpublic%2Fattachments%2FDOC-380731A1.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proposed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0an inquiry into the vulnerabilities of the internet\u2019s global routing system, in light of cyberthreats stemming from the war.<\/p>\n<p>On March 16 Rosenworcel said the agency had completed a review of Russian interests in U.S. communications networks, and shared findings with national security officials. She didn\u2019t provide details.<\/p>\n<p>For Friday\u2019s update of the list, the FCC said it relied on findings by the Department of Homeland Security and an executive branch interagency body called the Committee for the Assessment of Foreign Participation in the United States Telecommunications Services Sector.<\/p>\n<p>Homeland Security in 2017 had cited \u201crisk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaspersky at the time denied \u201cinappropriate ties with any government\u201d and criticized the U.S. decision as \u201cbased on false allegations and inaccurate assumptions, including claims about the impact of Russian regulations and policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FCC last year placed five Chinese companies on the list.<\/p>\n<p>They were Huawei Technologies Co., ZTE Corp., Hytera Communications Corp., Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese companies placed on the list Friday were earlier barred from the U.S. market by the FCC.
