{"id":43913,"date":"2012-02-22T09:54:32","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T07:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=43913"},"modified":"2012-02-22T09:55:28","modified_gmt":"2012-02-22T07:55:28","slug":"anonymous-has-u-s-officials-worried","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/43913-anonymous-has-u-s-officials-worried.html","title":{"rendered":"Anonymous has U.S. officials worried"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Online hactivist group <a title=\"Anonymous\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/362618-Anonymous\">Anonymous<\/a> has the U.S. based National Security Agency (NSA) worried, with the director noting the rapid growth of the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>General Keith Alexander, director of the NSA, warned that within a year or two, Anonymous could have the ability to create a \u201climited power outage\u201d though a cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p>While a power blackout has never been a goal stated by Anonymous, the group does have plans to \u201cshut down\u201d the Internet. Operation Global Blackout is set to take place on 31 March, and will likely involve a mass DDoS attack on key areas of the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Power grid officials in the US have said that their systems face attacks of a regular basis, and they have dedicated a \u201ctremendous amount of resources\u201d to repel these attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a recognition that there are groups out there like Anonymous, and we are concerned, as are other sectors,\u201d said an industry official.<\/p>\n<p>Cybersecurity specialist James Lewis agrees that Anonymous is a real threat. \u201cYou want to occupy Wall Street? How about turn Wall Street off?
