{"id":43973,"date":"2012-02-22T22:58:02","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T20:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=43973"},"modified":"2012-02-23T11:02:29","modified_gmt":"2012-02-23T09:02:29","slug":"mtn-cuts-off-cell-c-number-range","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/43973-mtn-cuts-off-cell-c-number-range.html","title":{"rendered":"MTN cuts off Cell C number range"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a> has recently cut off the 08419 <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> number range, making it impossible for their subscribers to reach these Cell C numbers. Industry feedback suggests that this happened on Thursday 16 February.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband called multiple 08419 numbers, and when using an MTN subscription we received the message: &#8220;The number you have called is not available on the MTN network&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The same numbers worked without any problems using a <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a>, Cell C or <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> subscription.<\/p>\n<p>The 08419 number range is currently used for value added Cell C services, which include international call-through services.<\/p>\n<p>With an international call-through service a user dials a number, types their number into an IVR and is then connected to an international number &#8220;for the price of a local call&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43985\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/43973-mtn-cuts-off-cell-c-number-range.html\/attachment\/christopher-geerdts\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43985\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43985\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43985\" title=\"Christopher Geerdts\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Christopher-Geerdts.jpg\" alt=\"Christopher Geerdts\" width=\"200\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Christopher-Geerdts.jpg 200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Christopher-Geerdts-68x75.jpg 68w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Christopher-Geerdts-127x140.jpg 127w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43985\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christopher Geerdts<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cell C is however not offering the international call-through service itself. Cell C signed up value added service (VAS) providers and allocated one or more numbers in the 08419 range to these providers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope that this is something that can be resolved soon so that our MTN user base can share the same benefits as those subscribed to other telcos,&#8221; said <a title=\"MXit\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226948-MXit\">MXit&#8217;s<\/a> MDialer product manager <a title=\"Claire Godden\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/406693-Claire-Godden\">Claire Godden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MTN are not providing a good service to their subscribers by blocking certain numbers that are ligitimate numbers. These numbers can be reached by Vodacom, <a title=\"8ta\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/276092-8ta\">8ta<\/a>, Telkom and Cellc, so why not MTN?&#8221; asks service provider Phone IT&#8217;s <a title=\"Clive Engelberg\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/406749-Clive-Engelberg\">Clive Engelberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Christopher Geerdts\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/284735-Christopher-Geerdts\">Christopher Geerdts<\/a>, CEO of <a title=\"XConnect\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314717-XConnect\">XConnect<\/a>, which provides wholesale international termination for local operators, explained that he received queries from a few service providers, and was able to get confirmation from MTN that they had blocked the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fortunately the services remain open from all other mobile and fixed networks. Judging from the high volumes, there is enormous, pent-up demand for affordable international calling at affordable rates,&#8221; said Geerdts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unfortunate that MTN has adopted this stance with the Cell C VAS number block as it is stifling innovation and denying access to useful services like our cheap overseas calling service,\u201d says Michael Toop, owner of the service provider Callall.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>MTN not talking<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>An industry insider said that queries to MTN have either met with no response, or been referred to Cell C for resolution.<\/p>\n<p>MTN was asked about their decision to cut Cell C&#8217;s 08419 number range, but the company would not comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43983\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/43973-mtn-cuts-off-cell-c-number-range.html\/attachment\/mothibi-ramusi-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43983\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43983\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43983\" title=\"Mothibi Ramusi\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mothibi-Ramusi.jpg\" alt=\"Mothibi Ramusi\" width=\"200\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mothibi-Ramusi.jpg 200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mothibi-Ramusi-67x75.jpg 67w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mothibi-Ramusi-125x140.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43983\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mothibi Ramusi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This is a matter between MTN and its stakeholders and MTN would not wish to comment until discussions have taken place,&#8221; said <a title=\"Robert Madzonga\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/343371-Robert-Madzonga\">Robert Madzonga<\/a>, MTN SA&#8217;s Chief Corporate Services Officer.<\/p>\n<p>MTN&#8217;s helpdesk was called, and they informed MyBroadband that the problem is definitely not with MTN, but rather on Cell C&#8217;s side.
