These cable breaks all occurred in the Gulf of Aden on 17th February 2012.

According to a well placed industry source the breaks may have been caused by a cargo ship that dragged its anchor over the area where all these cables lie on the seabed.

The repair operation is already under way, and further details about the cable breaks are expected to become available during this process.

This triple cable break is affecting over 100 telecoms operators in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe that rely on these cable systems for international connectivity.

The impact on South African telecoms operators is however limited by the redundancy in place from alternative cable systems SEACOM, SAT-3 and SAFE.

Related articles

EASSy downtime continues

[3
321,35,317,9043
post-44263","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-telecoms","tag-eassy","tag-headline","tag-seacom","tag-smw3
