{"id":445874,"date":"2022-05-28T14:03:17","date_gmt":"2022-05-28T12:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=445874"},"modified":"2022-05-28T14:06:50","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T12:06:50","slug":"south-africas-explosion-of-cloud-computing-providers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/445874-south-africas-explosion-of-cloud-computing-providers.html","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s explosion of cloud computing providers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s cloud computing space has seen an influx of major players launching services in the country over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>These include Amazon, Microsoft, and Huawei, which have all launched cloud regions in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud providers have spent billions of rands establishing their infrastructure locally.<\/p>\n<p>The launch of Amazon and Microsoft cloud nodes in South Africa meant that companies and developers could host their applications and data within the country.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to lower latencies, this made it easier for government-linked entities and companies with strict data protection requirements to use such services.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Amazon Web Services<\/h3>\n<p>Amazon Web Services (AWS) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/349001-aws-cape-town-region-goes-live.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened its Africa region<\/a><\/strong>, based in Cape Town, in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The region is named &#8220;Africa (Cape Town)&#8221; with the label &#8220;af-south-1&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>AWS told MyBroadband that the arrival of its infrastructure in South Africa would assist a range of organisations. It would also help developers start businesses and build new products and services.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Microsoft Azure<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft launched its South African Azure region in March 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The company recently <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/418020-microsoft-azure-availability-zones-launched-in-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched Azure Availability Zones<\/a><\/strong> in its South Africa North region.<\/p>\n<p>Microsft said this would bring higher availability and asynchronous replication across Azure regions for recovery protection.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Oracle<\/h3>\n<p>Oracle&#8217;s Johannesburg region <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/429864-oracle-cloud-launch-date-for-south-african-region-announced.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went live<\/a><\/strong> in January 2022. It is the cloud computing provider&#8217;s first region on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>The company initially announced its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/320317-oracle-to-launch-local-servers-in-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intentions to launch 20 new cloud data centres<\/a><\/strong>, including one in South Africa, by the end of 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed its plans.<\/p>\n<p>Oracle said the new facilities would make it easier for businesses in the region to improve performance and protect data.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Huawei<\/h3>\n<p>Huawei began offering its commercial cloud services in South Africa in March 2019 when it <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/298252-huawei-cloud-launches-in-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched its Johannesburg data centre<\/a><\/strong>. It aims to help African governments, carriers, and organisations across various industries.<\/p>\n<p>The company said South Africa was one of the most diverse and promising emerging markets globally.<\/p>\n<p>It plans to launch another data centre in Cape Town and has hinted at launching an availability zone in Durban.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Acronis<\/h3>\n<p>Acronis <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/431808-acronis-first-south-african-data-centre-goes-live.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled its Cyber Cloud Data Centre in Johannesburg<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 one of the 111 currently being deployed by the company \u2014 in late January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The data centre in Johannesburg will provide local organisations with a location within South Africa to store critical business and client data.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A local presence is a necessity for modern cloud businesses,&#8221; the company said when it launched.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Data-centre-server-room.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-445880\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Data-centre-server-room.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Data-centre-server-room.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Data-centre-server-room-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Data-centre-server-room-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Along with various global cloud computing players launching availability zones in South Africa, data centre infrastructure providers have been <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/439876-data-centre-boom-in-south-africa-with-billions-flowing-into-the-country.html\">investing billions into their local facilities<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Vantage Data Centres announced in October 2021 that it had <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/418228-new-r15-billion-data-centre-being-built-in-johannesburg.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begun construction on its Waterfall data centre<\/a><\/strong>.
