{"id":446372,"date":"2022-05-31T07:00:51","date_gmt":"2022-05-31T05:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=446372"},"modified":"2022-05-31T07:02:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T05:02:43","slug":"beware-buying-a-telkom-sim-from-takealot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/446372-beware-buying-a-telkom-sim-from-takealot.html","title":{"rendered":"Beware buying a Telkom SIM from Takealot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MyBroadband bought a preloaded Telkom prepaid unlimited data SIM from Takealot but could not use it because of problems with the Telkom online RICA system.<\/p>\n<p>The Telkom LTE Prepaid Unlimited Off-Peak bundle offers users unlimited data for 31 days after a once-off purchase.<\/p>\n<p>The unlimited package has speeds up to 10 Mbps for the first 250 GB used, up to 4 Mbps for another 50 GB, and then 2 Mbps for the rest of the month.<\/p>\n<p>The off-peak package costs R229 and only allows a subscriber to use this data between midnight and 19:00, covering most of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Users can also opt for the all-hours version for R849, which offers the same data limits for the whole day.<\/p>\n<p>To make it easy to order, Telkom is listing their unlimited data SIMs on Takealot.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband purchased one of the SIMs to test. It arrived with a sticker on it which offers instructions on how to activate the service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Telkom1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-446384\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Telkom1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Telkom1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Telkom1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Telkom1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It gives the same instructions on Takealot\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Visit rica.telkom.co.za to activate your SIM.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Telkom\u2019s RICA portal asks you to enter your personal details and upload a picture of your ID and proof of address.<\/p>\n<p>It seems easy enough, but the website keeps kicking us out on the second page.<\/p>\n<p>It simply says that there has been a technical error and that we can contact the call centre at 081 180 for assistance.<\/p>\n<p>We verified that this was not an isolated problem. It happened with more than one person when they tried to RICA their SIM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-446382\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pr.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pr-478x400.jpg 478w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pr-637x533.jpg 637w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pr-768x642.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We called the number provided and were connected to a consultant after a few button presses.<\/p>\n<p>The consultant verified that the SIM was not activated yet, but could only redirect us to another number which they said would be able to help.<\/p>\n<p>We dialled the proposed 10213 helpdesk. However, as soon as she heard we had a prepaid SIM, she said she could not assist. She said only the initial helpdesk we called could handle prepaid products.<\/p>\n<p>The consultant advised us to go into a store to have the sim RICA\u2019d and activated.
