{"id":446644,"date":"2022-05-31T15:33:58","date_gmt":"2022-05-31T13:33:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=446644"},"modified":"2022-05-31T15:36:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T13:36:02","slug":"dstv-dropping-movie-channel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/446644-dstv-dropping-movie-channel.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv dropping movie channel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyknet.dstv.com\/nuus\/flieknet-word-weer-n-opwipkanaal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DStv has announced<\/strong><\/a> it will stop offering the dedicated Afrikaans movie channel fliekNET as a permanent channel.<\/p>\n<p>FliekNet will be closed at midnight on 15 July 2022 and switched back to a pop-up channel. It is unconfirmed when the channel will &#8220;pop up&#8221; again.<\/p>\n<p>Initially launched as a temporary channel in 2014 to broadcast Afrikaans movies during the December holidays, DStv switched it to a permanent offering for DStv Premium subscribers in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The channel primarily airs full-length feature films, 50-minute short films, and documentaries from MultiChoice&#8217;s archive of Afrikaans content.<\/p>\n<p>To support fliekNET, the broadcaster launched a 50-minute film project in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>That resulted in the creation of more than 80 Afrikaans short films that were broadcast on fliekNET over the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Once fliekNET is shut down, new Afrikaans movies will premiere on DStv&#8217;s main Afrikaans channel \u2014 kykNET \u2014 at 20:00 every Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked DStv why it was shutting down the channel.<\/p>\n<p>While it did not provide a specific reason, the broadcaster said it continuously evaluated channel content to ensure good entertainment for its viewers while limiting repeats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Flieknet.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-446660 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Flieknet-e1653998455777.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"964\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Flieknet-e1653998455777.webp 964w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Flieknet-e1653998455777-600x331.webp 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Flieknet-e1653998455777-800x441.webp 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Flieknet-e1653998455777-768x424.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>DStv said it would continue to produce new Afrikaans short films and has also started developing and producing new 90-minute films that will start airing in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The broadcaster also said it would add dozens of kykNET movies to Showmax from 16 July 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The other major Afrikaans DStv channel \u2014 kykNET &amp;
