{"id":44677,"date":"2012-03-01T09:02:30","date_gmt":"2012-03-01T07:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=44677"},"modified":"2012-03-01T09:31:55","modified_gmt":"2012-03-01T07:31:55","slug":"windows-8-arm-users-beware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/44677-windows-8-arm-users-beware.html","title":{"rendered":"Windows 8 ARM users beware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/211580-Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a> has designed <a title=\"Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/360852-Windows\">Windows<\/a> 8 to be the company\u2019s first operating system that will be able to run on X86 (<a title=\"Intel\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307489-Intel\">Intel<\/a>, <a title=\"AMD\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/219302-AMD\">AMD<\/a>) architecture, as well as on <a title=\"ARM\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/360516-ARM-architecture\">ARM<\/a> architecture (<a title=\"Qualcomm\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/355674-Qualcomm\">Qualcomm<\/a>, <a title=\"Texas Instruments\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/385537-Texas-Instruments\">Texas Instruments<\/a>, <a title=\"Nvidia Corp.\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/361596-Nvidia\">Nvidia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, there is one major difference between the two architectures, X86 will be the only architecture capable of running legacy applications.<\/p>\n<p>This means that applications designed to run on previous versions of Windows like 7 and Vista will not run on Windows 8 if the device is powered by an ARM chip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re a professional and you have dedicated utilities, devices &#8230; all of that runs completely on an X86 Clover Trail [Intel] machine,\u201d said <a title=\"Steven Sinofsky\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/408695-Steven-Sinofsky\">Steven Sinofsky<\/a>, president of the Windows division at Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>This comment was backed up by <a title=\"Michael Angiulo\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/408701-Michael-Angiulo\">Michael Angiulo<\/a>, a corporate vice president at Microsoft, who noted that, \u201cIntel Clover Trail [X86-based] can also run all of the desktop software that already exists for Windows PCs. So, on the Intel platform it&#8217;s really everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair did have some good news for future Windows 8 application developers. &#8220;It&#8217;s the same app, it&#8217;s the same code.
