{"id":447158,"date":"2022-06-03T10:25:51","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T08:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=447158"},"modified":"2022-06-03T10:49:35","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T08:49:35","slug":"old-ipads-could-soon-run-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/447158-old-ipads-could-soon-run-linux.html","title":{"rendered":"Old iPads could soon run Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Owners of old iPads and iPhones could soon be able to run Linux on these devices, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2022\/06\/developers-get-linux-up-and-running-on-old-ipad-air-2-hardware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ars Technica reports<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The publication spotted a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/quaack723\/status\/1531965090018349057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>recent Twitter post<\/strong><\/a> by software developer Konrad Dybcio and Linux enthusiast quaack723.<\/p>\n<p>The pair managed to get Linux kernel version 5.18 to boot natively on an iPad Air 2, first released in October 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Ars Technica said the iPad appeared to be running PostmarketOS, an Alpine Linux-based distro.<\/p>\n<p>The tablet was never designed to run any other operating system than Apple&#8217;s iOS and iPadOS.<\/p>\n<p>The pair supposedly used the Checkm8 jailbreak method to get the software on the iPad.<\/p>\n<p>The well-known exploit uses an unfixable BootROM vulnerability that can provide root access to Apple devices released between 2012 and 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Dybcio said it took them more than a year to get the distro to boot, but they finally had success after realising they were missing one line of code.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">iPad Air 2 running Linux 5.18, now with Tux :) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qWENCvOd6e\">https:\/\/t.co\/qWENCvOd6e<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xBGHaRvJ7L\">pic.twitter.com\/xBGHaRvJ7L<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 quack723 (@quaack723) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/quaack723\/status\/1531965090018349057?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The pair claimed their approach could work on devices with Apple&#8217;s A7 and A8 Bionic processors, including the original iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPhone 5s and the HomePod.<\/p>\n<p>The operating system does not go beyond the boot process, however.
