{"id":448798,"date":"2022-06-14T12:52:48","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T10:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=448798"},"modified":"2022-06-14T13:00:36","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T11:00:36","slug":"internet-explorer-ends-with-a-whimper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/448798-internet-explorer-ends-with-a-whimper.html","title":{"rendered":"Internet Explorer ends with a whimper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internet Explorer reaches end-of-support tomorrow, 15 June 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft initially <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2021\/05\/19\/the-future-of-internet-explorer-on-windows-10-is-in-microsoft-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>announced<\/strong><\/a> it would end Internet Explorer (IE) support on 19 May 2021 and encouraged users to migrate to its Edge browser.<\/p>\n<p>The company ended Internet Explorer support for Microsoft 365 applications on 17 August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/windows-it-pro-blog\/internet-explorer-11-desktop-app-retirement-faq\/ba-p\/2366549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/strong> that it is retiring the legacy browser in two phases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the first phase, the redirection phase, devices will be progressively redirected from IE to Microsoft Edge over the next few months after June 15, 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the redirection phase completes, IE will be permanently disabled through a future Windows Update on all devices with Windows platforms that are in-scope for IE retirement,\u201d Microsoft said.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft also recommended that system administrators apply the Disable IE Policy in their environments based on their schedule to control their permanent disablement of IE.<\/p>\n<p>Since several enterprises still use older Internet Explorer-based applications, Microsoft built IE support into its newer browser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicrosoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode (\u201cIE mode\u201d) built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge,\u201d Microsoft said.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that Microsoft does not advise users to uninstall Internet Explorer since Edge\u2019s IE mode relies on it to function.<\/p>\n<p>Internet Explorer mode will be supported in Microsoft Edge until 2029.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChange was necessary, but we didn\u2019t want to leave reliable, still-functioning websites and applications behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft listed improved compatibility, streamlined productivity, and better security as the primary reasons Edge was a better choice for its users.<\/p>\n<p>Internet Explorer\u2019s retirement does not affect in-market Windows 10 LTSC, Server Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications, or the MSHTML (Trident) Engine.<\/p>\n<p>(With apologies to T.S.
