{"id":449900,"date":"2022-06-22T18:20:49","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T16:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=449900"},"modified":"2022-06-22T19:03:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T17:03:34","slug":"dstv-subscribers-becoming-less-valuable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/449900-dstv-subscribers-becoming-less-valuable.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv subscribers becoming less valuable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MultiChoice is losing its most valuable subscribers, and if it isn\u2019t careful could see itself consigned to being a budget TV option like so many of its local rivals in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>So <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/channel\/opinion\/opinion-why-dstv-subscribers-are-becoming-less-valuable-and-what-it-really-means-20220610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warns<\/a><\/strong> South African TV expert Thinus Ferreira.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to 702\u2019s Gugulethu Mhlungu, Ferreira explained that DStv subscribers remain the most valuable in South Africa\u2019s TV industry, but there are concerning signs of apathy at MultiChoice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are still the most valuable in the TV industry because these are people who are willing to pay money to watch television,\u201d Ferreira said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are still valuable but are becoming less valuable because people are switching to lower packages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice\u2019s financial statements support Ferreira\u2019s views, showing that the company\u2019s average revenue per user (ARPU) has steadily declined since its 2017\/18 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite DStv\u2019s overall subscriber base increasing.<\/p>\n<p>Stated differently \u2014 the number of DStv subscribers is increasing, but, on average, they are spending less even though MultiChoice increases its fees every year.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, DStv is bleeding high-end subscribers that pay R549 or R839 per month (excluding their R110 Access Fee) and only recording a net gain in viewers who pay less.<\/p>\n<p>This year, for the first time, <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/448162-dstv-exodus-premium-subscribers-not-the-only-ones-leaving.html\"><strong>MultiChoice also recorded a decline in its mid-market segment of 6%<\/strong><\/a>. (Click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MultiChoice\u2019s decline in DStv ARPU is likely a combination of several factors, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, and Commercial subscribers are downgrading their services to cheaper options.<\/li>\n<li>High-end and mid-market subscribers cancel outright, possibly switching to video streaming services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although some subscribers switching to streaming could subscribe to MultiChoice\u2019s Showmax, this would be at a much lower fee of R99 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it is impossible to plot DStv Premium subscriber numbers over the same period. MultiChoice changed its reporting metrics twice between 2018 and 2020 after Naspers spun the company into a separate JSE listing.<\/p>\n<p>The following chart from MultiChoice\u2019s results presentation shows how its premium market segment declined between 2018 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DStv-subscriber-numbers-2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-448166\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DStv-subscriber-numbers-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DStv-subscriber-numbers-2022.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DStv-subscriber-numbers-2022-600x357.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DStv-subscriber-numbers-2022-768x457.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ferreira explained that it\u2019s easy for a company like MultiChoice that has dominated its market for so long to begin \u201ccoasting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It happens gradually at first, and then suddenly, the company is stuck in a rut.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice has repeatedly stated that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/448344-how-dstv-competes-against-netflix-and-disney.html\">it has adopted a \u201chyperlocal\u201d content strategy<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 producing and delivering local African content in all its markets.<\/p>\n<p>But Ferreira says this isn\u2019t enough for the \u201cdiamonds\u201d of South Africa\u2019s TV industry to pay nearly R1,000 per month for DStv \u2014 there just isn\u2019t enough value for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[MultiChoice] keeps spending money on local content,\u201d said Ferreira.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you would hope there would still be a longing to spend money on premium or prestige content and not just localised Jerry Springer tabloid television-type content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DStv&#8217;s competitors also aren&#8217;t resting on their laurels when it comes to local content either.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/438692-netflix-spending-r900-million-on-shows-in-south-africa.html\">Netflix has announced substantial investments in South Africa<\/a><\/strong>, and Amazon Prime Video is adding Afrikaans films to its library.<\/p>\n<p>SuperSport remains DStv\u2019s killer premium offering, but even this faces increasing competition.<\/p>\n<p>Massive multinationals with deep pockets, like Amazon and Disney, are starting to bid on sports rights that have typically been DStv\u2019s domain.<\/p>\n<p>Major sporting leagues are also starting to offer streaming services directly to fans.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice\u2019s plan to become a \u201csuper-aggregator\u201d \u2014 offering subscribers a one-stop-shop to get Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and other streaming services \u2014 is also a hotly-contended space.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s forthcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/448352-dstv-streama-launch-plans-announced.html\"><strong>Streama media box<\/strong><\/a> must hold its own against Apple TV, and free software-based services like <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/445232-plexs-free-dstv-competitor-tested.html\"><strong>Plex<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/447028-google-tv-launches-in-south-africa.html\"><strong>Google TV<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With competition encroaching on the market MultiChoice has dominated for decades, it faces an existential question:<\/p>\n<p>Can it hold its own?
