{"id":4514,"date":"2008-07-16T15:45:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-16T13:45:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2008-07-16T15:45:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-16T13:45:00","slug":"facebook-security-slip-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/4514-facebook-security-slip-up.html","title":{"rendered":"Facebook security slip-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IT security and control firm Sophos has warned computer users that Facebook accidentally publicly revealed personal information about its members, which could be useful to identity thieves.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the full dates of birth of many of Facebook&#8217;s 80 million active users were visible to others, even if the individual member had requested that the information remained confidential.<\/p>\n<p>According to Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, a security slip-up by the website during the process of a public beta test of its new design for members&#8217; profiles, left birth date information exposed.<\/p>\n<p>Sophos has published the following video on its YouTube channel, demonstrating the security hole:&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jUY2UdSfL7s\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jUY2UdSfL7s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was shocked to see people&#8217;s full date of birth revealed, even though I knew they had their privacy set up correctly to supposedly hide the information,&quot; said Cluley.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#8217;s essential that users of social networks should have confidence that their privacy will be protected &#8211; and it&#8217;s especially important with information like your date of birth, which can be a golden nugget for a committed identity thief.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Cluley says he informed Facebook as soon as he discovered the flaw, which now appears to have been fixed.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#8217;s good that Facebook fixed the problem &#8211; but can people feel confident that this kind of mistake won&#8217;t happen again in future?&quot; he asked.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&quot;My advice to Facebook users would be, even if your date of birth is set to be non-visible, change it to a made-up date in case this kind of blunder happens again.&nbsp; Facebook and other social networking websites need to be more careful about protecting their members&#8217; data, or risk losing users.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Sophos recommends that dates of birth on Facebook should not just be hidden, but also fictional.<\/p>\n<p>Sophos noted that birth dates were exposed via the new design that Facebook is trialling for its personal user profile pages, which currently can be accessed via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.new.facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.new.facebook.com<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>According to the Facebook developer&#8217;s blog, Facebook will start rolling out the new profile page design to users this week.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Sophos published results of a identity theft probe into Facebook which uncovered that 41 percent of users, more than two in five, would divulge personal information &#8211; such as email address, date of birth and phone number &#8211; to a complete stranger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=127355\"><strong>Facebook security discussion<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Roll-out of new Facebook profile design marred by security slip-up<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4514","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-internet"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4514"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4514"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4514\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4514"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4514"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4514"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
