{"id":45223,"date":"2012-03-08T09:45:05","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T07:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=45223"},"modified":"2012-03-08T09:45:53","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T07:45:53","slug":"ibm-creates-terabit-per-second-capable-chip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/45223-ibm-creates-terabit-per-second-capable-chip.html","title":{"rendered":"IBM creates terabit-per-second capable chip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A single chip capable of transferring data at over 1 terabit per second has been created by <a title=\"International Business Machines (IBM)\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/361432-International-Business-Machines-(IBM)\">IBM<\/a> researchers, and could leave to the development of more powerful supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used \u201cHoley Optochip\u201d technology to achieve the speed, and believe that optical technology will become the future of supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the number one supercomputer ten years ago had no optics in it whatsoever, and now you&#8217;re seeing large scale deployments, mostly for rack-to-rack interconnects within supercomputers,&#8221; IBM Optical Links Group manager <a title=\"Clint Schow\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/410717-Clint-Schow\">Clint Schow<\/a> told <em>Ars Technica<\/em>. &#8220;It&#8217;s making its way deeper into the system and getting closer and closer to the actual processor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The chip uses just 4.7 watts to process almost one trillion bits per second, enough bandwidth to download 500 HD movies at a single time.
