{"id":452630,"date":"2022-07-14T10:42:10","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T08:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=452630"},"modified":"2022-07-14T10:42:56","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T08:42:56","slug":"eight-malware-infested-android-apps-downloaded-over-2-75-million-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/452630-eight-malware-infested-android-apps-downloaded-over-2-75-million-times.html","title":{"rendered":"Eight malware-infested Android apps downloaded over 2.75 million times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Evina security researcher Maxime Ingrao has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IngraoMaxime\/status\/1547164768401858560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discovered<\/a><\/strong> a new malware in at least eight Android applications available through Google Play Store.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed Autolycos, the malware reportedly has \u201cstealthy malicious behaviour\u201d, including subscribing users to premium services and executing URLs on a remote browser.<\/p>\n<p>The malicious applications would also request permission to read SMS data when users install it.<\/p>\n<p>The applications were collectively installed over 2.75 million times and included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vlog Star Video Editor \u2014 1 million downloads<\/li>\n<li>Creative 3D Launcher \u2014 1 million downloads<\/li>\n<li>Funny Camera \u2014 over 500,000 downloads<\/li>\n<li>Wow Beauty Camera \u2014 100,000 downloads<\/li>\n<li>Gif Emoji Keyboard \u2014 100,000 downloads<\/li>\n<li>Razer Keyboard &amp; Theme \u2014 over 50,000 downloads<\/li>\n<li>Freeglow Camera 1.0.0 \u2014 5,000 downloads<\/li>\n<li>Coco Camera v1.1 \u2014 1,000 downloads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ingrao told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/new-android-malware-on-google-play-installed-3-million-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BleepingComputer<\/a><\/strong> he discovered and reported the applications to Google in June 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Six applications, excluding the Funny Camera and Razer Keyboard &amp; Theme, were removed six months after Ingrao reported them.<\/p>\n<p>Due to Google\u2019s delay in removing the remaining applications, Ingrao publicly disclosed his discoveries via Twitter on 13 July.<\/p>\n<p>Since BleepingComputer\u2019s report, Funny Camera and Razer Keyboard &amp; Theme have been removed from the Google Play Store.<\/p>\n<p>Ingrao demonstrated that the creators of Razer Keyboard &amp; Theme aggressively promoted the application with 74 ad campaigns on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The malicious applications with fewer downloads reportedly boosted the applications\u2019 ratings by using bots to post good reviews.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/452388-fake-whatsapp-warning.html\">Fake WhatsApp warning<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New malware found in eight applications on the Google Play Store has infected approximately 2.75 million users\u2019 devices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":341094,"featured_media":452632,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[79828,56560,167,9557,801,79830],"class_list":["post-452630","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-security","tag-autolycos","tag-evina","tag-google","tag-google-play-store","tag-malware","tag-maxime-ingrao"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/452630"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/341094"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=452630"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/452630\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":452638,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/452630\/revisions\/452638"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/452632"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=452630"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=452630"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=452630"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
