{"id":45870,"date":"2012-03-22T13:07:11","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T11:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=45870"},"modified":"2012-03-22T13:48:18","modified_gmt":"2012-03-22T11:48:18","slug":"seacom-network-improvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/45870-seacom-network-improvement.html","title":{"rendered":"SEACOM network improvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Undersea data cable operator <a title=\"SEACOM\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227005-SEACOM\">SEACOM<\/a> has activated the first of two routes across Egypt in January 2012, with plans to complete the second route in Q2 2012.<\/p>\n<p>SEACOM was officially launched in July 2009 which marked the beginning of positive changes in numerous African countries via the spread of access to wholesale broadband Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Over 17,000km of undersea fibre optic cable was laid, connecting Africa to the rest of the world via India and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>One of the problems for the SEACOM cable was its reliance on other cable systems, such as the <a title=\"SEA-ME-WE-4 (SMW4)\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/306401-SEA-ME-WE-4-(SMW4)\">SE-ME-WE-4 (SMW4)<\/a> cable system, to provide onward connectivity to Europe and India.<\/p>\n<p>SEACOM\u2019s reliance on other cable systems has cost it dearly in both reliability and reputation. However, SEACOM has always planned to connect directly to Europe to remove the reliance on other cable systems.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45872\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/45870-seacom-network-improvement.html\/attachment\/seacom-cable-map\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-45872\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45872\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45872\" title=\"SEACOM cable map\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/SEACOM-cable-map.jpg\" alt=\"SEACOM cable map\" width=\"600\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/SEACOM-cable-map.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/SEACOM-cable-map-100x70.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/SEACOM-cable-map-185x130.jpg 185w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/SEACOM-cable-map-250x176.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SEACOM cable map<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Good news is that SEACOM has made good progress on extending its network and removing its reliance on partner cables.<\/p>\n<p>SEACOM activated the first of two routes across Egypt in January 2012. \u201cSEACOM\u2019s customers should be seeing a latency improvement of around 40ms RTD on our working path,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSEACOM plans to keep the Mumbai leg open for added resilience until the second route is complete.\u00a0 This will ensure that SEACOM\u2019s service is well protected through the Suez region.
