{"id":460786,"date":"2022-09-15T12:04:40","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T10:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=460786"},"modified":"2022-09-15T12:07:23","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T10:07:23","slug":"dstv-competitor-kills-its-afrikaans-channels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/460786-dstv-competitor-kills-its-afrikaans-channels.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv competitor kills its Afrikaans channels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>StarSat will drop its two Afrikaans channels from the platform on 30 September 2022, the owners of MyTV and OnseTV have announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarSat, the South African branch of StarTimes Media, has ended Afrikaans on the StarSat decoder after 13 years of broadcast,\u201d said MyTV CEO Jaco Ferreira.<\/p>\n<p>On Digital Media <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/12236-toptv-official-channel-and-pricing-details.html\"><strong>launched TopTV<\/strong><\/a> in South Africa on 1 May 2010.<\/p>\n<p>It was South Africa\u2019s first noteworthy DStv contender since MultiChoice launched its satellite pay-TV service.<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira says that ASTV was accepted as the only Afrikaans channel on TopTV in October 2009. It operated out of Rustenburg and was later rebranded MyTV.<\/p>\n<p>On Digital Media soon ran into financial troubles and <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/76864-startimes-to-take-over-toptv.html\"><strong>Chinese pay-TV player StarTimes bought the company<\/strong><\/a> out of business rescue in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>OnseTV started broadcasting on 29 September 2017 on StarSat channel 462.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause OnseTV management works daily with a wide variety of people in the industry, it was clear from the start that there were no focused channel to cater for the largest Afrikaans-speaking community in South Africa,\u201d Ferreira said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was decided to create a TV channel, specifically for the brown Afrikaans community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira said OnseTV has been broadcasting with great success for the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe response from our immediate communities of colour has been and continues to be incredible,\u201d Ferreira said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, StarSat informed OnseTV and MyTV that their contracts would not be renewed. The channel operator said it received no reason for this decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnseTV have become an entertainment home for the brown community. To fully live out their culture and language and thus bridging cultural gaps,\u201d Ferreira stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe untapped talent and talented people present in this community, previously and presently dismissed from mainstream media, are still looking for well-deserved recognition. Something OnseTV gave them for the past five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira said E-tv\u2019s owners approached him in 2013 and struck a deal to broadcast ASTV on Openview HD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter this contract expired, ASTV\u2019s broadcast on OVHD stopped.
