According to Modular Mining Systems, this move is driven by mine management, which would prefer to see all on-site systems running on standard platforms that are easier to support as well as integrate with existing corporate enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications.
 
Modular Mining Systems says that is meeting the demands of this transition with Windows-based products. Modular, headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, with offices around the world, including SA, aims to provide mine management and control systems to meet the open pit, underground and rail requirements of clients around the globe. In the past, all its systems were designed to run on Linux and Modular’s own proprietary database.
 
Lourens du Plessis, new business development manager at Modular Mining SA, explains that taking responsibility for the platform, database and applications means a slower time to market for development companies.<\/font><\/p>\n

“Instead of being able to concentrate on software that adds value, developers also need to focus on platform testing and compatibility before they can roll out new functionality. Using the Windows platform and Microsoft’s SQL Server database, the amount of work and subsequently time taken to market is substantially reduced,” he adds.
 
The first product from Modular using an embedded version of Windows XP is its MLX hardware controller. The hardware is installed in trucks and cranes to provide drivers with real-time information on where they should be and what they should be doing. All vehicles are monitored via GPS to calculate their most productive use.
 
Data from these and other devices is now stored in an SQL Server database and can be transferred to the mine’s ERP system. Not only does this provide management with real-time information on what is happening at the coalface, but it also allows for more accurate business intelligence analysis and consequently better trending and reporting, Du Plessis says.<\/font><\/p>\n
