{"id":464199,"date":"2022-10-12T14:09:01","date_gmt":"2022-10-12T12:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=464199"},"modified":"2022-10-12T16:27:16","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T14:27:16","slug":"big-mtn-mobile-data-outage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/464199-big-mtn-mobile-data-outage.html","title":{"rendered":"Big MTN mobile data outage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MTN users across South Africa reported the operator&#8217;s data network was slow or offline for several hours on Wednesday, 12 October 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/mtn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Downdetector<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=MTNza&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/a> showed numerous reports of slow or no responses when using data services on MTN&#8217;s network, starting from around 11:30 AM.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Been unable to use my phone&#8217;s Internet services, my one and only social media network (Twitter) because of some funny <span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@mtnza <\/span>issues!&#8221; one user on Twitter complained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;@MTNza, what&#8217;s happening with the network? Are you guys okay there? We&#8217;re not connected,&#8221; another said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Is MTN data down? All devices with MTN not connecting,&#8221; a third user stated.<\/p>\n<p>Several users from other African countries \u2014 including Nigeria \u2014 also complained about connectivity problems.<\/p>\n<p>South African Internet service providers that sell LTE products on MTN&#8217;s network confirmed they were investigating the issue.<\/p>\n<p>These included Afrihost, RSAWeb, Supersonic, and Vox.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are investigating reports of no connectivity affecting clients on our fixed LTE and MTN mobile network,&#8221; Afrihost said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working on identifying and resolving this issue as quickly as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>RSAWeb said it was observing a national MTN network outage affecting LTE and fixed-LTE services and that its engineers were investigating.<\/p>\n<p>The graph below from Downdetector shows the surge in complaints relating to MTN network issues on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/MTN-outage-on-Downdetector_12-October-2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-464203\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/MTN-outage-on-Downdetector_12-October-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/MTN-outage-on-Downdetector_12-October-2022.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/MTN-outage-on-Downdetector_12-October-2022-600x249.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/MTN-outage-on-Downdetector_12-October-2022-800x332.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/MTN-outage-on-Downdetector_12-October-2022-768x319.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked MTN for comment on the apparent outage.<\/p>\n<p>MTN South Africa executive for corporate affairs, Jacqui O&#8217;Sullivan, confirmed the operator was aware of the issue and was urgently attending to it.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Sullivan said the operator required more time to gather additional information with regards to the outage&#8217;s extent, cause, and an estimated time to restoration.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband will update this article with further details as soon as received.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"my-4\">Update \u2014 15:23<\/h2>\n<p>O&#8217;Sullivan said the issue was resolved and the network was returning to normal performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MTN would like to apologise to its customers for the network interruptions 4G and 5G some users may have experienced earlier today,&#8221;
