{"id":464327,"date":"2022-10-13T12:16:18","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T10:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=464327"},"modified":"2022-10-13T12:18:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T10:18:40","slug":"goodbye-passwords-google-rolling-out-passkey-support-to-android-and-chrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/464327-goodbye-passwords-google-rolling-out-passkey-support-to-android-and-chrome.html","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye passwords \u2014 Google rolling out passkey support to Android and Chrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google has started rolling out support for passkeys in its Android mobile operating system and Chrome browser, the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/android-developers.googleblog.com\/2022\/10\/bringing-passkeys-to-android-and-chrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>blog post on Wednesday<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Passkeys are a newer type of login credential intended to replace passwords.<\/p>\n<p>They require a user to provide biometric authentication \u2014 such as a fingerprint or facial scan \u2014 or a PIN via a smartphone or secondary device logged into their password management service.<\/p>\n<p>If app and software developers choose to support the capability with Google&#8217;s new WebAuthn API, users will be able to create and use passkeys for Android apps and on websites accessed through Chrome.<\/p>\n<p>The passkeys will be securely stored and synced on Google Password Manager, much like a password would be saved.<\/p>\n<p>Google contends that passkeys are significantly safer than passwords and other &#8220;phishable&#8221; authentication factors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They cannot be reused, don&#8217;t leak in server breaches, and protect users from phishing attacks,&#8221; Google explained.<\/p>\n<p>Passkeys are backed up and synced through Google&#8217;s cloud infrastructure to prevent account lockouts in cases where a device might be lost or stolen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Additionally, users can use passkeys stored on their phone to sign in to apps and websites on other nearby devices,&#8221; Google added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"my-4\">How passkeys will work on Android and Chrome<\/h2>\n<p>Google said its passkeys followed familiar user experience patterns like the password autofill workflow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For end-users, using one is similar to using a saved password today, where they simply confirm with their existing device screen lock such as their fingerprint,&#8221;
