Telkom<\/a> and MWEB<\/a> have released their ADSL<\/a> key performance indicators (KPIs) for October 2011 to December 2011, giving the average performance related to latency, packet loss and jitter.<\/p>\n

These KPIs are a requirement of the ADSL regulations which were published on 17 August 2006 by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The regulations require Telkom and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to publish, on a quarterly basis, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) detailing at the least, packet loss, average latency and jitter for the provisioned ADSL service.<\/p>\n

The MWEB and Telkom Key Performance Indicators (KPI) give some insight into the performance of Telkom and MWEB’s ADSL networks, but the lack of proper testing guidelines by ICASA is a significant shortcoming in the value of these reports.<\/p>\n

Despite the shortcomings \u2013 which were essentially brought about by a very poor set of regulations by ICASA \u2013 it remains interesting to look at the KPIs published by Telkom and now MWEB.<\/p>\n

The following table provides a comparison on the performance of MWEB and Telkom’s ADSL networks.<\/p>\n
