{"id":467203,"date":"2022-11-02T11:08:57","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T09:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=467203"},"modified":"2022-11-02T11:12:20","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T09:12:20","slug":"south-africas-fourth-essential-utility-private-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/467203-south-africas-fourth-essential-utility-private-security.html","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s fourth essential utility \u2014 private security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as Internet access is rapidly becoming a third essential utility for South African homes after water and electricity, a fourth has emerged \u2014 private security.<\/p>\n<p>Vumacam has released the results of a survey conducted with Fletcher Advisory to gauge people\u2019s perceptions and awareness of having CCTV installed around their neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also asked respondents to rank the importance of goods, services, and activities they spend money on.<\/p>\n<p>Internet access took the top two spots, followed closely by home security and being able to enjoy outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, safety, Internet and defence against load-shedding ranked higher than entertainment like dining out or having coffee with friends.<\/p>\n<p>It is no surprise that South Africans rank home security\u2019s importance similarly to essential utilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africa is plagued by some of the highest levels of crime worldwide,\u201d said Vumacam CEO Ricky Croock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatistics show that our country has the third-highest crime rate in the world, expressed per 100,000 people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Global Peace Index has South Africa ranked as the tenth most unsafe place in the world to live. This index also estimates that violent crime consumes up to 19% of the country\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>The Gallup Law and Order Index ranked South Africa the fifth most dangerous country out of the 144 countries covered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf one thing is clear, it is that crime robs South Africans of lives, livelihoods and confidence in our country\u2019s future,\u201d said Croock.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_467207\" style=\"width: 2570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-467207\" class=\"wp-image-467207 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-559x400.jpg 559w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-745x533.jpg 745w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-1536x1099.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-2048x1465.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Vumacam-Fletcher-Advisory-important-expenses-1200x858.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-467207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vumacam and Fletcher Advisory survey results on South Africans\u2019 financial priorities<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In August, the South African Police Service (SAPS) presented the country\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/618173\/these-crimes-are-worse-than-ever-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quarterly crime statistics<\/a><\/strong> for the April to June 2022 period.<\/p>\n<p>It showed that although contact crimes had decreased overall, crimes like hijacking, murder, theft, burglary, and robbery all saw increases.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa recorded 6,424 murders, 39,638 residential burglaries, and 5,370 residential robberies during the period.<\/p>\n<p>Sexual offences declined, but remained high at 11,855 recorded cases during the quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also asked respondents about their experience of crime, and they all indicated that they had been impacted by crime in some way at some point in their life.<\/p>\n<p>Although the survey focused mainly on how crime had impacted respondents while in public, a high percentage indicated that crime had knock-on effects on other areas of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>68% said they had experienced damage to their home, 58% said there had been damage to their vehicles, 45% said shops they most often visited were impacted by crime, and 28% said their office and workspaces had been hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs daunting as these figures are, South Africa\u2019s positive attributes are abundant,\u201d Croock said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor those of us who call this home, the need to tackle crime and live, work, and enjoy in a safe country is pivotal.
